Yes. Trial by Fire (2018) is a drama based on Cameron Todd Willingham’s case, not a documentary or a verbatim reconstruction. The real case began with a 1991 house fire in Corsicana, Texas, that killed Willingham’s three young daughters. He was convicted of arson-related murder and executed in 2004; later fire-science reviews challenged the basis for the original arson conclusion.
What happened in the real case?
On December 23, 1991, a fire destroyed the Willingham family home in Corsicana, Texas, and killed his three daughters. Willingham survived. His wife was away buying Christmas presents, according to the Innocence Project’s case summary.
Prosecutors alleged that Willingham deliberately set the fire. At his 1992 trial, the prosecution presented fire investigators’ testimony that the fire had been intentionally set, along with a jailhouse informant’s claim that Willingham had confessed. Willingham said he had been asleep and maintained his innocence. He was sentenced to death on October 29, 1992.
Before the execution, fire investigator Gerald Hurst reviewed the case and challenged the original forensic analysis. The Innocence Project says officials received Hurst’s report before Willingham was executed by lethal injection on February 17, 2004.

What does the film portray—and what is established?
Netflix identifies Trial by Fire as a 2018 drama and a movie based on real life. Its catalog synopsis describes a woman trying to prove that a death-row man was wrongly convicted of killing his children in a fire. That establishes the film’s premise and its connection to Willingham’s case; it does not verify individual scenes as historical fact.
As with other dramatizations, dialogue, chronology, private interactions, and character portrayals should not be treated as a record of exactly what happened unless independently corroborated. The available case summary supports the central events—the fire, the prosecution, the conviction, the later expert scrutiny, and the execution—but does not establish scene-by-scene accuracy.

Why did the arson finding come under scrutiny?
The trial’s arson conclusion relied in part on investigators’ interpretation of fire patterns and other indicators. Later reviewers challenged whether those indicators could reliably establish that the fire had been deliberately set. Craig Beyler, the investigator hired by the Texas Forensic Science Commission to review the case, was quoted by the Innocence Project as concluding that “a finding of arson could not be sustained.”
That assessment challenges the forensic basis for the original conclusion; it is not itself a court ruling about who started the fire. The Innocence Project argues that subsequent evidence showed Willingham did not set it. Because the organization advocated for his posthumous vindication, that conclusion should be understood as its position rather than a judicial finding.

What did the Texas Forensic Science Commission conclude?
The Texas Forensic Science Commission reviewed the case after the Innocence Project submitted it between 2006 and 2011. The commission issued a report on April 15, 2011, and an addendum on October 28, 2011, with recommendations concerning investigator education and the review of older arson cases.
The commission’s work addressed forensic practice and recommendations; it was not a formal declaration that Willingham was innocent. A contemporaneous Texas Tribune account reported that the commission did not rule on whether investigators were negligent or committed professional misconduct. Its review should not be described as an exoneration or a court finding of innocence.
