Is the Time Right for a New Salem’s Lot? Comparing the 1979, 2004 and 2024 Adaptations

Yes—a new ’Salem’s Lot can be worthwhile because Stephen King’s 1975 novel offers more than a vampire threat: it builds dread through a town’s gradual collapse. Gary Dauberman’s 2024 feature takes on that story after two television miniseries, directed by Tobe Hooper in 1979 and released in 2004. The formats invite different choices about pace, characters and tone; no single adaptation is a definitive substitute for the others.

What is the new ’Salem’s Lot?

It is Gary Dauberman’s feature-film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 novel, not a new miniseries. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement describes author Ben Mears returning to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot for inspiration and discovering that a vampire is preying on the town. The film debuted on Max on October 3, 2024, a date also recorded on King’s official work page.

The announced cast includes Lewis Pullman as Ben Mears, Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody, Makenzie Leigh as Susan Norton, Bill Camp as Matthew Burke, Spencer Treat Clark as Mike Ryerson, Pilou Asbæk as Straker and John Benjamin Hickey as Father Callahan. The release announcement lists Dauberman as writer and director.

How do the three adaptations compare?

Version Format What stands out What to keep in mind
1979 Television miniseries Cheryl Eddy’s 2024 Gizmodo/io9 preview calls it the most emotionally believable version and notes its overt, Nosferatu-like Barlow design. That preference is Eddy’s critical judgment, not an objective verdict.
2004 Television miniseries Eddy describes it as grittier, with more emphasis on Father Callahan and faith; she considers its Barlow more book-authentic. These are the preview’s characterizations of the adaptation.
2024 Feature film Dauberman’s version retells the novel in a shorter film format than the earlier miniseries, with Pullman as Ben Mears. The preview did not disclose Barlow’s design. Its concerns about story compression were expectations, not an assessment of the finished film.

Eddy’s comparison says the 1979 and 2004 miniseries each run just over three hours. That gives the earlier versions more room for the novel’s people and subplots than a feature generally has. The preview raised the question of what a film might leave out; it should not be mistaken for a confirmed account of the finished feature’s specific cuts.

Why revisit the story?

Jerusalem’s Lot is not merely a backdrop for a vampire hunt. The premise turns a familiar community into the source of the danger: Ben returns to a place he knows, then finds the town itself changing. That combination of local memory and creeping threat gives each adaptation room to choose what kind of horror it wants to emphasize.

The two miniseries show how far apart those choices can be. Hooper’s 1979 version presents Barlow as an overt creature, while the 2004 adaptation takes a different approach and, in Eddy’s reading, gives more weight to faith and Father Callahan. A new version need not repeat either one to make the novel’s central setup work; it can find its own balance between atmosphere, character and vampire horror.

Is the 2024 film worth watching?

It is a reasonable choice if you want to see how a feature handles King’s story after two miniseries. If you value the slower build and larger ensemble associated with the earlier television versions, the format difference matters: a feature has less room to retain every character and thread. The 2024 preview’s strongest recommendation of the older versions is specifically its preference for the 1979 miniseries’ emotional believability, so treat that as one critic’s comparison rather than a consensus ranking.

For a comparison focused on adaptation choices, the 1979 and 2004 miniseries are useful alongside the film, not interchangeable with it. Readers can also start with King’s ’Salem’s Lot novel to see the source story behind all three versions.
