The Sixth Sense is fictional, not a retelling of a documented haunting or a ghost encounter M. Night Shyamalan said he experienced. The writer-director did draw on childhood fears—especially the uneasy feeling that someone might be in a house when he was alone—when shaping the film’s emotional world.
What inspired The Sixth Sense?
In an August 25, 1999 interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, Shyamalan said childhood fears influenced the film. He described feeling uneasy in certain houses and sensing that someone else might be there. He did not say that he had seen a ghost. He described ordinary childhood unease as an influence, not a supernatural event from his life. (Fresh Air interview)
Shyamalan also explained why he made a child the character open to the unexplained: “we are more open to believing in everything when you’re a child.” His comment helps explain the film’s point of view; it is not evidence that the ghosts in the story are real.
Where did the story’s key idea come from?
In a later interview with Creative Screenwriting, Shyamalan described imagining a wake where a child sat on the stairs talking to someone nobody else could see. He said that imagined situation led to the scene involving the Collins family. It was a story idea, not an account of an event he witnessed in real life. (Creative Screenwriting interview)

So, is the movie based on a true story?
No. The film’s ghost story and plot are fictional. The accurate qualification is that Shyamalan drew on childhood fears for some of its emotional texture and developed at least one memorable scene from an imagined situation. Neither account establishes that he experienced a haunting or that the film recounts a real case.
