Yes. Bethesda says the Prime Video Fallout series takes place in the same universe as the games, and Todd Howard has described it as canon. The show tells an original story in that shared setting, though that does not mean it settles every choice or ending players can reach in the games.
What “canon” means for the Fallout series
Bethesda’s official announcement describes the series as set in the same universe as the games, with Vault survivors facing a radiation-ravaged Wasteland. That establishes a shared setting and continuity—not a scene-by-scene adaptation of a particular game’s main quest. Bethesda’s announcement also identifies Prime Video as the series’ platform.
The distinction matters: the show can add characters and events of its own while drawing on the games’ world and history. Co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet told About Amazon that the creators did not want to copy one game’s story and instead set out to craft their own. Read the creator interview.

| Game | Year in the official game timeline |
|---|---|
| Fallout 76 | 2102 |
| Fallout | 2161 |
| Fallout 2 | 2241 |
| Fallout 3 | 2277 |
| Fallout: New Vegas | 2281 |
| Fallout 4 | 2287 |
Bethesda calls Fallout 76 the formal beginning of the games’ timeline and identifies Fallout 4 as its latest point. The official show material cited here does not give the series’ precise in-world year, so these game dates should not be mistaken for a confirmed date for the show. See Bethesda’s Fallout timeline.
Does the show decide which game ending is canon?
No single player’s choices should be assumed to define the entire shared continuity. The games can end differently depending on player decisions, and a series set in the same universe does not, by itself, establish which outcome the show accepts.

In an interview reported by GamesRadar+, Todd Howard said the creators try to respect what came before while telling events from the perspective of people in the world, where accounts can conflict. The comments leave some implications open to interpretation rather than presenting every disputed detail as settled fact. Read GamesRadar+’s report.
