No. The Brutalist is not a true-story biopic, and its central characters, László and Erzsébet Tóth, are fictional. Director and co-writer Brady Corbet and co-writer Mona Fastvold built their story from several real architectural histories and the experiences of displacement and postwar migration, rather than adapting one architect’s life.
Are László and Erzsébet Tóth real people?
No. The Tóths are fictional characters, not historical figures whose biographies the film recreates. Film editor Dávid Jancsó put the distinction plainly: “No, it is absolutely not based on a true story. It is based on many true stories. It could be true. It should be true. It is true. Our characters are all fictional.” Source: Dávid Jancsó interview
Corbet and Fastvold considered whether a real architect’s life matched the premise. According to the film’s production notes, they asked architectural scholar Jean-Louis Cohen about an architect who had established a practice in one country, experienced wartime displacement and exile, and then had to begin again abroad. Cohen could not identify one person whose biography fit. The writers therefore invented László and Erzsébet rather than presenting a real couple under fictional names. Which real architects inspired László Tóth?
The film draws on more than one architect’s work and experience; it is not a disguised portrait of a single person. Corbet has specifically named Louis Kahn and Mies van der Rohe as influences on László’s American experience, and singled out Hungarian-born Marcel Breuer as a particularly important reference. Those are creative influences identified by the filmmaker, not evidence that László’s life belongs to any of them. Source: International Press Notes

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters: the film’s invented biography gathers ideas and historical echoes into one character. It does not claim that Breuer, Kahn or van der Rohe followed the same life story as László.
How do displacement and the Holocaust shape the story?
The fictional narrative draws on the broader history of wartime persecution, Jewish displacement and postwar migration, as well as the difficulties immigrant artists can face. The production notes describe these themes as part of the filmmakers’ construction of the story; they do not establish the Tóths as real people. Corbet offered this historical framing in the notes: “The truth of the matter is that most Eastern or Central European Jewish architects that got stuck in Europe during the war did not make it out alive.” This is Corbet’s statement about the context informing the film, not a standalone statistical finding. The creators also describe Jewish identity, the Bauhaus context and the niece’s legacy as deliberate elements of their fictional story. These are aspects of the film’s design and themes, not proof of a real Tóth family. Source: Corbet and Fastvold conversation

Is the Van Buren Institute a real building?
No. The Van Buren Institute was created for the film by production designer Judy Becker; it is not a real commission by an architect named László Tóth. Becker’s process drew on references including Marcel Breuer, Tadao Ando, James Turrell and concentration-camp design. The screen building combines an architectural model, constructed set portions and existing locations. Source: Judy Becker interview
Corbet describes Brutalist architecture as “austere” yet “monumental,” with buildings that can be loved or loathed and take time to register in the public imagination. That is the director’s interpretation of the style and its emotional effect, not a neutral definition of Brutalism. Source: International Press Notes
