The Muppet Show returned as a one-off special event on February 4, 2026, but the available public evidence does not verify that it became Disney+’s most-watched show in the United States. Nielsen’s weekly U.S. streaming chart offers a snapshot for a specific week, not a launch ranking or Disney+’s internal title rankings.
What is confirmed about the revival?
Disney announced The Muppet Show as a “special event,” rather than confirming an ongoing new season. It premiered February 4, 2026, on Disney+ at 12:00 a.m. Pacific / 3:00 a.m. Eastern and on ABC at 9:00 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. Disney’s February U.S. release calendar lists it as a Disney+ Original premiere and says Kermit, Miss Piggy and the ensemble return to the original Muppet Theatre, with Sabrina Carpenter as a guest star.
Disney’s official announcement and trailer also names Maya Rudolph as a guest star, and Seth Rogen as both a guest star and executive producer. Alex Timbers is credited as director and executive producer. The announcement credits 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures.
Does the evidence show it was Disney+’s most-watched U.S. show?
No public evidence in the sources cited here verifies that claim. Disney’s announcement confirms the special’s release and creative details, but does not report a U.S. audience total or say the title topped Disney+’s rankings. The reviewed sources also do not provide Disney’s internal U.S. ranking, an exact launch-window streaming total, or evidence of a service-wide No. 1 position.

That makes the “most-watched” claim unverified, not disproved for every date or possible measurement. To establish it, a ranking would need to identify who measured viewing, the period covered, the geography, the metric—such as minutes, starts or households—and whether the comparison covers Disney+ titles or all streaming services.
What does Nielsen’s U.S. streaming chart say?
Nielsen’s displayed U.S. Streaming Top 10 for September 14–20, 2026 ranks programs by total minutes viewed among people aged 2 and older. Neagley ranked first overall at 1,776 million minutes; Bluey ranked eighth at 739 million minutes and was the highest-ranked program associated with Disney+ in that chart. The Muppet Show does not appear in the displayed Top 10.

This is a weekly chart, not an all-time ranking, a launch-window measurement or a Disney+-only leaderboard. Nielsen states that its chart uses Streaming Content Ratings and the Nielsen National TV Panel, with U.S. viewing through television. Its provider list reflects services with program-level data in specific systems, while the viewing data include streaming beyond the listed providers. The chart therefore cannot show whether the special led Disney+ at another time or under a different metric.

Disney says Jim Henson created the original The Muppet Show, which ran from 1976 through 1981 and aired in more than 100 countries. Dave Goelz, an original performer, originated Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, among other characters. Disney’s 2021 library announcement said all five seasons would stream on Disney+; availability can vary by territory and date.

Disney’s 2026 announcement recalls that Time magazine described the original series in a 1978 story as “the most popular television entertainment now being produced on Earth.” That is a historical characterization of the original series, not a current audience statistic or evidence about the 2026 special.
