Not exactly. Charlie Hunnam’s Ed Gein speaks in a soft, unusually high, childlike voice, but the performance is an interpretation, not a precise reproduction. Hunnam says he developed the voice before hearing a recording of Gein shortly before filming. After briefly trying to imitate the recording, he chose to keep his own version.
How Hunnam created Gein’s voice
Hunnam said he had already devised his approach to Gein’s voice when he gained access to an interview recording about a week before shooting. He tried to parrot what he heard for a couple of days, then returned to the voice he had created because it better reflected his reading of the character. He described that voice as an affectation: a persona he imagined Gein used in relation to his mother.
As Hunnam explained to Netflix Tudum in September 2025, “It was what Ed thought that his mother wanted him to be. As she was really his only human contact in the world, he developed this thing to try and make her love him.” That is Hunnam’s interpretation for the role, not a verified account of Gein’s inner life.
How the performance compares with the available recording
A comparison published by TheWrap describes Gein in the available interview audio as speaking softly and without hurry. The recording does not sound as high-pitched as Hunnam’s portrayal. TheWrap also reports that the documentarian behind the MGM+ docuseries Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein characterized Gein’s voice as “meek and mild.”

| Aspect | What reporting says about Gein’s recorded voice | Hunnam’s performance |
|---|---|---|
| Pitch | Not as high as the performance, according to TheWrap’s qualitative comparison. | Noticeably high-pitched and childlike. |
| Pace and volume | Soft-spoken and unhurried, as described by TheWrap. | A restrained, deliberately constructed character voice. |
| Purpose | A limited recording offers evidence of how Gein spoke in that interview. | An acting choice shaped by Hunnam’s interpretation of the character. |
These are qualitative observations, not acoustic measurements. The reporting discusses limited audio; it does not establish how Gein sounded in every setting or conversation. Nor does soft, slow speech establish a particular accent.
Why the voice sounds so unsettling
The gap between the recorded voice and Hunnam’s version is part of the performance’s effect. Hunnam’s higher register and childlike quality make the character sound vulnerable and unsettling at once. That choice belongs to the series’ dramatization; it should not be treated as documentary evidence about Gein’s voice or psychology.

What else changed in Hunnam’s transformation
The voice was one element of a broader physical performance. Netflix reported that Hunnam lost about 30 pounds to create a more malnourished frame, and described his physicality as restrained. Hunnam said, “I lost almost 30 pounds just to get a more malnourished, light frame. Ed was incredibly lithe.” The figure is Netflix’s reporting of Hunnam’s account, not an independently verified measurement.
