What does Wind River say about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls?
The film’s fictional investigation can prompt viewers to think about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and the complexities of jurisdiction in cases involving Indigenous communities. The National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC) describes the movie as a way to get a general audience interested in the issue, while emphasizing that it needs more context and post-viewing dialogue. NIWRC also notes that the central viewpoint belongs to a non-Native man.

NIWRC’s 2018 discussion, “Wind River Feature Film Tackles the Subject of Missing and Murdered Native Women,” offers that additional perspective.

Is it a good fit for your watchlist?
- Consider it if you want a bleak, atmospheric crime mystery with a remote winter setting and performances from Renner and Olsen.
- Check the content first if sexual violence, strong violence, disturbing images or strong language are concerns; Apple TV’s rating specifically flags these elements.
- Watch with context if you are interested in the MMIWG themes. NIWRC recommends further context and open dialogue rather than treating the film as a complete account of the issue.
