Sony was reported to have acquired the film rights to Tarzan and to be planning a modern reimagining in September 2022. As of the sources reviewed, no release date, cast, filmmaker, plot, trailer, or current production phase has been publicly established. Sony’s May 2026 CinemaCon recap did not mention Tarzan, but that omission alone does not show the project was cancelled—or that it is moving forward.
What Sony’s Tarzan movie is—and isn’t—known to be
TheWrap reported on September 30, 2022, that Sony had picked up Tarzan film rights from Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. and wanted a “total reimagining” of the property for modern audiences. That phrase describes the reported broad ambition, not a confirmed plot or a detailed creative plan. TheWrap attributed its report to a person with knowledge of the project; it did not quote a named Sony representative announcing the film.
At the time, TheWrap reported that no producer, writer, or director was attached. Cinema Express reported the following day that Sony declined to comment and that writers, a director, cast, and crew were expected to be announced. That was an expectation expressed in 2022, not confirmation that those announcements later happened. TheWrap’s September 2022 report and Cinema Express’s contemporaneous account establish the early report, not the project’s present status.
Release date, cast, and production status
No release date, cast, filmmaker, plot specifics, production start, trailer, or current production phase is verified in the sources reviewed. The available reporting also does not establish whether a screenplay exists or whether anyone has joined the project since 2022, so those details should be treated as unannounced here—not assumed to be settled or absent everywhere.

MovieInsider’s project page lists Tarzan as in development and shows a timeline entry dated October 8, 2022, with the release date to be announced. The page does not document a later update in the material reviewed, so its listing is not evidence of the film’s 2026 status. See MovieInsider’s project listing.
What Sony’s 2026 CinemaCon recap tells us
Sony Group published a recap of its CinemaCon presentation on May 19, 2026, listing a range of film news without mentioning Tarzan. That establishes only that Tarzan was not included in that recap. A slate recap is not a comprehensive status report, so its silence cannot confirm cancellation, active development, or a release plan. Sony Group’s CinemaCon recap is the latest limited official check among these sources.
How the project fits Tarzan’s adaptation history
Edgar Rice Burroughs created the Tarzan story in 1912, and the character has since appeared across sequels and screen and other adaptations, according to TheWrap. Cinema Express points to the 2016 live-action film The Legend of Tarzan, directed by David Yates and starring Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie. Sony’s reported project is another proposed adaptation of an established character; its specific approach has not been established, so it cannot yet be meaningfully compared with earlier versions.

For the source material behind the character, look for Edgar Rice Burroughs’s novel Tarzan of the Apes. It is a related read, not an announced tie-in edition for Sony’s proposed film.
