A Showbox-branded streaming website is online, but the available evidence does not verify that the former Android app’s developers have returned or relaunched it. No authenticated statement from a named original developer explaining a current relaunch has been established. A site using the name, or an APK page displaying a version number, is not proof of either connection.
What “Showbox is back” means—and what is verified
There are two different claims that can be confused: that a website currently uses the Showbox name, and that the people behind the former Android app have officially brought it back. The ShowBox.media FAQ describes a free streaming and download service, but the site’s own description does not establish who operates it or whether it is connected to the app’s developers. Read the ShowBox.media FAQ.
Separately, an August 8, 2026 iTechGuides article reports that it could not verify an identifiable official developer or authoritative current distribution channel for the former app. That is a reported verification result, not proof about every file or site that uses the name. It does mean that a posted APK version alone cannot authenticate who built or signed the file. Read iTechGuides’ 2026 report.
What happened to the former Showbox app?
Historical reporting helps explain why the name is difficult to authenticate today, but it does not establish a current return. On December 8, 2018, TorrentFreak described copyright-related legal pressure around Showbox and noted that users could not reliably tell whether app builds were original or modified. That account concerns the situation at the time; it does not prove that every Showbox-branded site or app was shut down. Read TorrentFreak’s December 2018 report.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Another distinction is between an app developer and a website that promotes or distributes an app. In a September 30, 2018 report, TorrentFreak said a site operator linked to Showbox was not the app’s developer and that an APK promoted through the operator’s website came from a third-party site. A distributor’s association with the name therefore does not, by itself, verify the software’s creator. Read TorrentFreak’s report on the site operator.
Does the 2018 outage story explain a current relaunch?
No. A Showbox-branded post dated December 11, 2018 said the application had been down for about a week and had returned with an update. That is an account published by a site using the Showbox name, not a verified statement from a named developer. It describes a past outage and does not authenticate a present-day relaunch. Read the December 2018 post.

- Ask to control your TV with your voice, and quickly cast your photos, videos, music and more from your phone, tablet, or PC to your TV with Chromecast built in
- Built-in Virtual Assistant – just press the mic button on the remote to get what you want
- Built-in content and entertainment including YouTube, Play Movies & TV, and more
- Support for thousands of Apps on the Play Store
- 2K resolution TV streaming
The reviewed material does not provide a current, authenticated explanation from an original developer. It would be misleading to present the old outage account as an explanation of what happened now or to attribute it to developers whose identities have not been verified.
How to assess a Showbox-branded app or service
Branding and a version label are not enough to establish an app’s provenance. The current FAQ also makes security and privacy assurances and says media is hosted by third parties; those are claims made by the site, not independent confirmation of its operator, licensing, app origin, or the assurances themselves.

- Developer identity: Look for a named developer whose identity can be authenticated, rather than a generic claim of being “official.”
- Release channel: Check whether the download comes from a verifiable channel controlled by that developer. A version number on an APK page does not show who built or signed the file.
- Connection to the former app: Require evidence that links the present operator and release channel to the historic app’s developers. Sharing the name is not that evidence.
- Content rights and support: Look for clear information about content licensing and a named support contact; the material reviewed does not establish these for the current offering.
Do not treat an APK as official or safe merely because it carries Showbox branding, uses HTTPS, displays a version number, or is hosted by a site that makes its own security claims. The reviewed sources do not establish enough about individual APKs for a reliable feature or safety ranking.
