Evolution revisits the concise, accessible pop-rock approach associated with Sheryl Crow’s ’90s success, but it is not simply a throwback. Her eleventh full-length studio album pairs familiar songcraft with contemporary worries about artificial intelligence and public life, as well as reflections on relationships and aging. Released March 29, 2024, the standard edition has nine songs and runs about 35 minutes.
Is Evolution a return to Sheryl Crow’s ’90s pop-rock sound?
In part. The album’s compact format and accessible pop-rock songs can recall the directness of Crow’s earlier work, but “return to ’90s pop-rock basics” is an interpretation, not a description Crow presented as the album’s mission. Its concerns are rooted in the present, and its familiar style does not mean every listener will find the songs fresh.

The official album announcement leaned into the record’s approachable side, calling “Alarm Clock” perhaps Crow’s most radio-friendly pop song since “Soak Up The Sun.” It described “You Can’t Change The Weather” as an optimistic singalong and “Love Life” as laid back. Those are the announcement’s promotional characterizations rather than objective measures of the songs. “Do It Again,” the sole track produced by John Shanks, was described there as slinky.
There is also a less celebratory critical reading. In an April 2, 2024 review, Claire Shaffer of Pitchfork argued that some songs resemble archetypes from Crow’s established playbook, sometimes making her appeal feel generic. That is one reviewer’s judgment, not a consensus claim, but it captures the trade-off in returning to a recognizable sound: its familiarity can be a pleasure or a limitation.

Why did Crow make another full-length album?
Crow had publicly described Threads as her last full-length album, but songs continued to come. In her November 3, 2023 official announcement, she said she first sent one song to producer Mike Elizondo; it grew to four, became an EP plan, and ultimately expanded to nine songs. Crow recalled writing the album in a month and described the quick process as reminiscent of older records.
She also chose not to produce herself this time. Crow said she had grown tired of recognizing her own habits and did not want to carry the emotional workload of production. Elizondo, who had played bass in her band, brought what she described as a fresh approach. Tom Morello contributes a guitar solo on the title track.
In a GRAMMY.com interview, Crow discussed the path from the original song to the finished album. The quick, expanding process helps explain how Evolution came about; it does not by itself establish that the record was made to recreate a particular decade.
What does Evolution explore beyond nostalgia?
AI and the title track
Crow said the title track began with unease about artificial intelligence, its possible effects on the planet and people, and whether it could become a constructive partner in addressing those concerns. In the official announcement, she connected that anxiety to wanting to leave a better world for her children. The subject places the song firmly in contemporary debate, rather than in a backward-looking celebration of ’90s pop culture.

Public life and relationships
Crow described “Broken Record” as addressing people who use large platforms to stir up hate and fear. The album also includes songs about relationships and life more broadly; its accessible musical approach coexists with those reflective subjects rather than displacing them.

Who is likely to enjoy the album?
- Listeners who want Crow’s concise pop-rock songwriting: The nine-song standard edition offers a short, direct listen, with several tracks framed by the official announcement as accessible or radio-friendly.
- Listeners interested in current themes: The title track’s AI concerns and “Broken Record”’s focus on hate and fear give the record subjects beyond romantic or personal nostalgia.
- Listeners wary of familiar formulas: Shaffer’s Pitchfork review offers a reason to approach expectations carefully: she found some songs too close to established Crow archetypes.
