Yes—Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot is still moving forward as of October 8, 2026: Hulu ordered a pilot in February, and star Himesh Patel said filming wrapped. But that is not the same as a full-series order. The latest cited reporting leaves the pilot awaiting a decision, with no confirmed release date.
What is confirmed about the reboot?
Hulu ordered a pilot for the project in February 2026, according to TheWrap’s report. In June, Patel said he and co-star Danielle Deadwyler had “just wrapped on the pilot,” as reported by The Direct. That establishes that the project progressed from development into filmed production.
The distinction matters: a pilot is an initial episode made for a network or platform to evaluate. A pilot order does not guarantee a season, public release, or premiere date. A July 21, 2026 report said Disney and Hulu had not publicly announced a decision on what happens next.
What is the new X-Files about?
The reported premise centers on two highly decorated but very different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond after being assigned to a long-shuttered division handling unexplained phenomena. Patel and Deadwyler play new characters, not younger or recast versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. TheWrap’s casting report named the leads and creative team.

Creative and production team
- Ryan Coogler wrote and directed the pilot.
- Jennifer Yale was named showrunner.
- Chris Carter, creator of the original series, is an executive producer.
- 20th Television produces for Hulu’s Onyx Collective, according to TheWrap.
Coogler has described an intended mix of standalone cases and a continuing mystery. In a December 2025 interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, quoted by TV Guide, he said: “We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy.” That reflects his creative plan, not confirmation that a season has been commissioned.
Has Hulu ordered a full season or set a release date?
Neither is established in the cited reporting. The confirmed step is a Hulu pilot order, followed by Patel’s report that filming had wrapped. The July 21 status report from Enstarz said the studios had not confirmed the next step. No premiere date or public release plan is established by these reports.

Could it become a movie instead?
A theatrical-film possibility was reported, but it remains unconfirmed. Enstarz relayed a July 17 claim from World of Reel that Coogler had asked Disney to consider a feature release; the same report noted that Disney and Hulu had not confirmed it. Treat it as speculation about a possible format, not a decision. There are not yet confirmed release options to compare.
Will Gillian Anderson or David Duchovny return?
No return by either original star is confirmed in the cited reports. In an August 7, 2026 interview, Gillian Anderson praised Coogler’s approach, calling it “incredibly unique” while also “quintessentially X-File-ian,” but said she could not answer whether she would be involved. SYFY Wire’s interview does not establish her participation. The cited reporting likewise does not confirm David Duchovny’s return.

How does it relate to the original series?
The original The X-Files ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny returned for revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, and the franchise also had feature films in 1998 and 2008. Those are franchise milestones, not evidence of the reboot’s continuity: the new leads are original characters, and the available reporting does not establish whether the project shares the original show’s timeline or how it may connect to its story.
