Robert Downey Jr. said in April 2024 that he would “happily” return as Tony Stark, calling the role “too integral a part of my DNA.” That was the actor expressing openness—not a Marvel casting announcement. Disney later announced his MCU return as Doctor Doom, not Iron Man.
What did Robert Downey Jr. mean by “in my DNA”?
Asked about returning as Tony Stark, Downey answered, “Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me.” ABC News reported the remark on April 8, 2024, in the context of an Esquire interview. He also praised Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, saying, “never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.” ABC News’ report records what Downey said; it does not announce that Marvel had cast him again as Tony Stark.
In a later Variety Actors on Actors conversation with Jodie Foster, Downey made a related comment: “It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea.” BGR reproduced that remark on June 4, 2024. On July 27, 2024, Disney announced that Downey would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Disney’s March 26, 2025 announcement identified the character as Victor von Doom and said production on Avengers: Doomsday had begun. It listed May 1, 2026 as the film’s then-announced theatrical date and May 7, 2027 for Avengers: Secret Wars. Does the quote mean Tony Stark is coming back?
No. Downey’s comments show that he was open to the possibility; they do not establish that Marvel had decided to bring Tony Stark back. Tony sacrificed himself at the end of Avengers: Endgame. ABC News also quoted Feige, speaking to Vanity Fair, saying Marvel “would never want to magically undo it in any way.” That context is a reason not to treat Downey’s personal remarks as confirmation that Tony’s ending will be reversed.
