Is Netflix’s The Deliverance Based on a True Story? The LaToya Ammons Case

The Deliverance draws on LaToya Ammons’s family’s reported experiences in Gary, Indiana, but Netflix’s film changes names, setting and details. Here’s what reporting establishes—and what remains an allegation.

Yes. Netflix’s 2024 film The Deliverance was inspired in part by LaToya Ammons’s family and their reported experiences in Gary, Indiana, beginning in 2011. But it is a dramatization, not a documentary reconstruction: the movie changes names, setting and other details. Reports describe the family’s claims of paranormal events alongside child-welfare, police, hospital and psychological involvement; they do not establish that a haunting or demonic possession occurred.

What happened in the LaToya Ammons case?

According to TIME’s account of the Indianapolis Star’s 2014 investigation, Ammons and her three children moved into a rented house on Carolina Street in Gary, Indiana. Ammons said the events began in December 2011, when black flies appeared on the screened porch despite winter temperatures. TIME reports that the children were then 7, 9 and 12.

The family’s accounts reportedly escalated over the following months, including descriptions of levitation and possession. Those are claims attributed to the family, not independently established supernatural facts. The situation drew involvement from Gary police, Indiana’s Department of Child Services (DCS) and a hospital.

TheWrap reports that the Indianapolis Star reviewed more than 800 pages of official records and interviewed police, DCS personnel, psychologists, family members and a Catholic priest. TheWrap also recounts the late Gary police captain Charles Austin’s reported statement, “I am a believer.” That remark reflects one person’s reported view; it does not verify a paranormal explanation.

Why did child welfare and clinicians become involved?

TIME says an unnamed complainant made a DCS report in April 2012 that raised possible abuse or neglect and mental-health concerns. The account also describes psychologists’ concerns about the children’s statements, including one assessment that called a child’s stories “bizarre, fragmented and illogical.” These are reported institutional and clinical responses, not proof of what caused the family’s experiences.

TIME reports that Rev. Michael Maginot performed three major exorcisms in June 2012. Ammons regained custody in November 2012 after moving and working to meet DCS case-plan objectives. The case therefore includes competing perspectives and documented agency involvement; neither a religious rite nor the agencies’ actions establish that a haunting took place.

How much of The Deliverance is true?

The film takes its premise from the Ammons case, but its characters and story are fictionalized. Netflix’s Tudum explainer describes the adaptation as based on the case “in part.” Netflix’s official media listing calls it inspired by a true story and identifies Lee Daniels as director. That wording signals inspiration, not a scene-by-scene account of the real family’s lives.

Reported case Netflix film
The family was Ammons and her three children, according to TIME. The family is named Jackson; Andra Day plays Ebony, according to Netflix’s Tudum explainer.
The reported events took place in Gary, Indiana, beginning in 2011, according to TIME. The film is set in Pittsburgh, TIME reports.
TIME says the real religious figure was a man, Rev. Michael Maginot, who performed exorcisms. The film features Rev. Bernice James, a fictionalized religious figure, according to TIME.
TIME reports that the case involved police, DCS, a hospital and psychologists. Netflix’s synopsis frames the fictional family’s story around strange events, child-protection concerns and a fight to protect the children.

TIME also reports that director Daniels changed the mother’s race. The movie’s scenes, character arcs and ending should not be treated as events that happened to Ammons and her children. Daniels told Tudum, “I didn’t see it as a horror film, at least not in the way people have come to expect.” Andra Day described the film as “a story with a social justice message that deals with family trauma, PTSD, and cyclical brokenness.” Those comments explain the filmmakers’ framing, not the truth of the supernatural claims.

What do the reports say about the house and the aftermath?

TIME says the landlord reported no issues with the house before or after the family lived there. It also reports that the house was demolished in 2016 during production of Zak Bagans’s 2018 documentary Demon House. The building’s later demolition does not resolve what happened inside it.

TIME’s account is a summary of the Indianapolis Star investigation, rather than a direct review here of the original investigation and underlying records. Details about the case and quotations from that reporting are therefore attributed to TIME or TheWrap. The available accounts support describing what participants said and how institutions responded, but not declaring a supernatural cause proven.
