Netflix’s Running Point is the basketball workplace comedy behind the comparison to Ted Lasso. Kate Hudson plays Isla Gordon, who unexpectedly takes charge of her family’s fictional LA Waves franchise. The two shows share a sports-team setting, underdog dynamics and a leader trying to bring people together—but Running Point is more sarcastic, not a second version of Ted Lasso.
What is Netflix’s Running Point about?
Running Point follows basketball heiress Isla Gordon as she becomes president of the LA Waves, a struggling professional team owned by her family. Netflix says her eldest brother, Cam, goes to rehab and names Isla as his replacement. The result is a comedy about navigating a sports organization while dealing with family relationships and the demands of leadership.
The series was created by Mindy Kaling, David Stassen and Ike Barinholtz. Netflix’s season 2 coverage identifies Kaling, Barinholtz and Stassen as returning showrunners, writers and executive producers. The show also drew inspiration from Jeanie Buss, the LA Lakers governor and minority owner, who executive produces alongside Lakers special projects manager Linda Rambis.
How is it like Ted Lasso—and how is it different?
The comparison works best as a guide to the broad appeal, not as a claim that the series are interchangeable. Both put a team’s fortunes inside a workplace comedy and give viewers an underdog situation shaped by a leader trying to prove herself and unite the people around her.

#1 Best Overall
The main distinction is tone. BGR characterizes Running Point as having snappy, sarcastic humor, while Ted Lasso leans into earnest optimism. If you want a feel-good sports comedy with team dynamics but are open to sharper jokes and a basketball setting, Running Point is a reasonable next watch.
Baseball analyst and broadcaster Jim Bowden praised it as “the best sports sitcom since Ted Lasso,” according to BGR, which reproduced his reaction after he said he had watched all 10 episodes. That is one viewer’s endorsement, not a formal rating or evidence of a critical consensus.

Is Running Point really Netflix’s “top-rated” series?
“Top-rated” should not be read as a current Netflix ranking. BGR reported a 92% Rotten Tomatoes audience score on March 4, 2025. That is a dated audience-score figure, not an official Netflix rating, a verified score today or proof that Running Point leads Netflix’s current shows.
