Mamma Mia 3 has not been reported as cancelled. The “disappointing update” in the January 2026 headline was that Amanda Seyfried referred a question about the possible sequel to co-star Stellan Skarsgård rather than offering an update herself. Later comments from NBCUniversal chair Donna Langley and Seyfried were more encouraging, but as of October 4, 2026, the reports cited here give no filming date or release date.
What was Amanda Seyfried’s “disappointing update”?
In an interview indexed by IMDb News on January 8, 2026, Collider’s Aidan Kelley asked Seyfried about a possible third film at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards. The available excerpt says she directed him to Stellan Skarsgård. That was a deferral, not an announcement that the film had been cancelled. The full Collider article is not available in the cited record, so the exchange should not be treated as evidence of more than that limited response. IMDb News’ indexed Collider report
What changed after that interview?
Donna Langley described active conversations
On February 23, 2026, CinemaBlend reported comments from NBCUniversal Entertainment chair Donna Langley, who said, “Yes, I’m going to say right now that there will be a Mamma Mia 3.” She added that she did not know when filming would begin, but was “in conversations with Judy Craymer” and that they were “talking about it actively.” Langley also said the studio would find a way to bring Meryl Streep back if Streep wanted to return. These are strong studio-level signals and evidence of active discussions, not a production schedule or confirmation of Streep’s participation. CinemaBlend’s report on Langley’s comments
Seyfried later sounded optimistic
Speaking at a Vote Mama campaign event on September 25, Seyfried told USA TODAY that Craymer “would do anything to get us together.” She added, “It seems inevitable,” while noting that 2027 would mark ten years since the previous film was shot. Her remarks reflect her view of the sequel’s prospects; the reference to 2027 was not a filming or release commitment. USA TODAY’s interview, syndicated by Yahoo

Is Mamma Mia 3 officially in production?
Langley’s February statement is the clearest studio signal in the reporting cited here: she said there would be a third film and that she was actively talking with producer Judy Craymer. But the reports do not establish that production has started. In November 2025, Seyfried had said she was “pretty sure” the film was “a done deal”; Variety explicitly noted at the time that it had not been officially announced. Taken together, the comments indicate sustained interest and active talks, but they do not supply a formal production start, confirmed creative team, or release schedule. Variety’s November 2025 report
When could Mamma Mia 3 be released?
No release date is stated in these reports. Langley said she did not know when filming would begin, and Seyfried’s mention of 2027 referred to the ten-year interval since the previous movie was shot. It should not be read as a target year for the third film’s release.

What might the story be—and will Meryl Streep return?
No final plot or cast is confirmed in the cited reporting. In 2025, Seyfried floated a possible story focused on Sophie in the present, with children and new female characters. She also joked that Donna might return as a ghost. Those were her ideas, not an approved story or confirmation of Streep’s involvement. Langley’s comment was conditional: the studio would find a way to bring Streep back if she wanted to return.
The prospect of another film has been discussed for years. In a 2023 Vogue oral history, producer Judy Craymer said, “If I had my way, Mamma Mia 3 would be in the can already. There has to be another one because people want it.” That history helps explain why cast comments and speculation have continued, but the more recent studio comments are the stronger signal about the project’s current prospects.
