No. Land of Bad is a fictional military thriller, not a dramatization of a documented mission or an adaptation of a book. Director and co-writer William Eubank has said the filmmakers drew on real-world military research and consultation, but that does not make the story itself true.
What is Land of Bad about?
The film follows a covert Special Forces operation in the southern Philippines that goes wrong. Rookie Sergeant JJ Kinney is left trying to survive, with remote support from Air Force drone pilot Captain Eddie Grimm, known as “Reaper.” Netflix places the story near the Sulu Sea. Netflix Tudum’s plot and cast explainer describes the premise; Paramount’s official film page likewise presents it as a fictional covert operation.

Why does the movie feel grounded in real military work?
Eubank discussed consulting people with military experience, including a drone pilot and advisers with Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) experience, in an interview with Task & Purpose. He summed up the distinction this way: “Land of Bad isn’t a true story but we took a lot from true things.”
That supports describing the movie as informed by research, not as a reconstruction of a particular event. The available sources do not independently verify the accuracy of every tactic, procedure, or sequence shown on screen.

Was Land of Bad No. 1 on Netflix?
That ranking claim was time- and location-specific. Forbes reported on July 20, 2024, that Land of Bad was the No. 1 film on Netflix in the United States at that time: Forbes’ July 2024 coverage. It should not be read as a current ranking; the cited report does not establish where the film ranks today.
