Kylie is a Jenner by surname and a member of the Kardashian-Jenner family. The question makes more sense when it separates family relationships from surnames and the family’s public-facing brand.
What is Kylie Jenner’s relationship to the Kardashian family?
Kylie Jenner is part of the Kardashian-Jenner family. In a 2011 CNN interview, host Joy Behar introduced Kris Jenner as the mother of Kim, Kourtney, Khloé, Kendall, Kylie and Rob. Kris also said, “Kendall and Kylie grew up on the show.” CNN’s interview transcript documents how the family was described publicly at the time.

A 2026 Who What Wear interview refers to Kim Kardashian as Kylie’s sister and reports Kylie discussing her parents and growing up on television. These sources support describing Kylie as part of the family; they do not establish a formal rule for who qualifies as a “real Kardashian.”
Why do people ask whether Kylie is a Kardashian?
Her surname is Jenner
Kylie’s public name is Kylie Jenner, while several of her siblings use Kardashian. That difference in surnames can prompt the question, but a surname by itself does not define whether someone belongs to a family. The reviewed sources identify her as Kris Jenner’s daughter and Kim Kardashian’s sister.
#1 Best Overall
The public brand is called Kardashian-Jenner
“Kardashian-Jenner” is a useful label for the family’s shared public and media identity. It is not the same thing as a legal or biological category, and the sources do not say that every family member must use Kardashian as a surname to be included.
The phrase “real Kardashian” has no stated test
None of the cited interviews defines “real Kardashian” as a formal status or sets criteria based on surname, television appearances, career or public image. Without a definition, the phrase is an opinion or shorthand—not a verifiable finding about Kylie’s family relationships.
Rank #2
What the family members have said
In a 2011 Redbook interview, Khloé Kardashian said, “We are a real family.” That is her description of the group, not a formal definition of who counts as a Kardashian. Similarly, Kris Jenner’s comment that “Kendall and Kylie grew up on the show” establishes their place in the family’s television story, not a rule about surnames.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
- Supported: Kylie is identified in the cited coverage as Kris Jenner’s daughter and Kim Kardashian’s sister, and as part of the Kardashian-Jenner family.
- Not established: That “real Kardashian” is a defined family status, or that a person must carry the Kardashian surname to belong to the family.
- Not a sound test: Appearance, career, television exposure or the surname Kylie uses cannot be treated as evidence that she is or is not a “real” family member.
