Netflix Tudum’s current guide lists Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 as “Stream it now.” That confirms Netflix availability in the catalog covered by the guide, not in every country; streaming rights vary by territory and can change. The Western opened in US theaters on June 28, 2024, reached premium video on demand on July 16, and debuted on Netflix on December 30, 2024, according to Forbes.
What is Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 about?
Directed by Kevin Costner, the 181-minute Western begins in 1859 in Arizona’s San Pedro Valley. Two surveyors mark out a proposed settlement called Horizon, but conflict and a deadly raid reshape the settlers’ plans. The film also follows other characters, including members of an Apache tribe. Netflix describes the story as fictional, although it is set in Civil War-era America.
Costner wrote the film with Jon Baird and Mark Kasdan. Its ensemble includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Owen Crow Shoe, Will Patton, Jamie Campbell Bower, Giovanni Ribisi, Abbey Lee, Tatanka Means, Danny Huston, Michael Rooker, and Luke Wilson. Netflix Tudum identifies it as the first installment in a planned four-part series. Netflix Tudum’s guide provides the synopsis and credits.
When and how did it move from theaters to Netflix?
- June 28, 2024: The film opened widely in US theaters, distributed by Warner Bros., according to The Numbers.
- July 16, 2024: It arrived on premium video on demand, Forbes reported. The Numbers records a video release on that date by Warner Home Video.
- December 30, 2024: Forbes reported that the film debuted on Netflix. Netflix Tudum’s current guide now lists it as available to stream.
Check the title in your own Netflix app or local catalog before planning to watch: the available country list is not established by the cited guide, and streaming catalogs can change.

Why was its box-office performance called a disappointment?
Its theatrical gross was modest relative to the production-cost figures reported for the project, and the planned theatrical release of Chapter 2 was postponed after the first film’s poor box-office performance, Forbes reported. “Box-office dud” is a characterization, not an official category or a complete accounting of the film’s profitability.
As of October 8, 2026, The Numbers lists $29,035,702 in domestic box office and $9,800,000 internationally, for $38,835,702 worldwide. It lists a domestic opening weekend of $11,052,561. Forbes reported a $31 million worldwide theatrical tally in its December 30, 2024 article, citing The Numbers; that dated figure differs from the database’s currently displayed total.

Budget estimates also differ, so the gross should not be treated as a precise measure of loss or profit:
- The Numbers lists a $50 million production budget (database figure accessed October 8, 2026).
- The Associated Press reported in May 2024 that the production cost more than $100 million.
- Forbes summarized a $100 million pre-marketing figure attributed to The Hollywood Reporter in December 2024.
Those estimates do not have an explicitly established common basis. The theatrical gross alone does not show what the studio or filmmakers ultimately received after distribution, marketing, and other costs.

What happened to Chapter 2?
Chapter 2 had been scheduled for August 16, 2024, but Forbes reported it was pulled from that date after Chapter 1’s poor box-office performance. A New Line spokesperson told Forbes that the change was meant to give audiences more time to discover the first installment, including through premium video on demand and Max. The sources cited here do not establish a current Chapter 2 release date as of October 8, 2026.
The project’s financing also drew attention: in a May 2024 Associated Press interview, Costner said he had mortgaged his Santa Barbara estate to raise money for the film. The AP described the production as costing more than $100 million.
