Dave Filoni will lead creative work as president and chief creative officer, while Lynwen Brennan becomes co-president. Whether that change brings a new creative chapter is still an open question; the announcement establishes a new leadership structure, not its eventual success.
What is changing at Lucasfilm?
On January 15, 2026, Disney announced that Kennedy would transition out of the Lucasfilm presidency after nearly 14 years leading the studio. Dave Filoni will become president and chief creative officer, with creative leadership, and Lynwen Brennan will serve as co-president. Disney said both will report to Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman. Disney’s announcement and Lucasfilm’s announcement describe distinct responsibilities, rather than a simple one-for-one replacement.
Kennedy is returning to full-time producing and remains attached to The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter. Disney announced theatrical release years of 2026 and 2027 for those films; those are planned years, not guarantees that schedules cannot change.
Who are Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan?
Dave Filoni: creative leadership
Filoni, a longtime Lucasfilm creative with experience in both animated and live-action Star Wars, is taking the president and chief creative officer roles. Disney’s announcement assigns him creative leadership. It does not establish that he will make every decision alone or control all of Lucasfilm’s operations.

Lynwen Brennan: co-president
Brennan becomes co-president alongside Filoni. The official announcement presents the pair as combining creative vision with operational leadership. That is Disney’s explanation for the structure, not independent evidence that the division of responsibilities will work well in practice.
What does Kennedy’s record say about the handoff?
Kennedy’s tenure is difficult to reduce to a simple success-or-failure verdict. Lucasfilm’s account credits her with overseeing The Force Awakens, the first film in the new Skywalker Saga trilogy, and the move into live-action Star Wars series. It says Rogue One grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Those details come from the studio’s own retrospective, which is useful for its account of the slate but reflects an institutional perspective. Lucasfilm’s overview also lists animated and live-action productions from the period.

The Associated Press described the era as “highly lucrative but often contentious,” citing blockbusters and acclaimed streaming spinoffs alongside growing frustration among longtime fans. AP reported more than $5.6 billion in box office for Lucasfilm under Kennedy’s stewardship in its January 15, 2026 report. That is AP’s reported total, not an audited financial statement, and box-office revenue does not measure audience satisfaction. Read the Associated Press report.
For a documentary-minded assessment, the useful distinction is between commercial reach, critical and audience reception, the breadth of the franchise, and the consistency of theatrical output. A strong result on one measure does not settle the others. The available record supports a mixed retrospective: major commercial successes and expansion, alongside reported frustration from some longtime fans.

Why does the phrase “A New Hope” fit—and where does it stop?
The title echoes the 1977 film Star Wars, later known as A New Hope. Lucasfilm’s company history says the film became a global phenomenon and helped fuel the company’s growth. Lucasfilm’s history gives the phrase genuine historical resonance, but the original film’s cultural impact cannot be projected onto a new leadership arrangement.
The handoff could create an opportunity for a different approach to storytelling and franchise planning. Whether it does so will be clearer only through the projects that are developed and released, how well creative and operational leadership work together, and how audiences respond. Neither Disney’s announcement nor the leadership change itself proves that Star Wars will improve.
