If you want the first film’s propulsive crime story or a conventional action-led comic-book sequel, it may not be for you. The mixed response makes more sense once you know how differently this film approaches the character.
What kind of film is Joker: Folie à Deux?
Todd Phillips’s 2024 film picks up with Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham and awaiting trial for the crimes he committed as the Joker. Lady Gaga plays Lee Quinzel, whose relationship with Arthur and the film’s use of music become central to its exploration of identity. The official film page describes the story, while the Venice Biennale listing identifies Phillips as director and Scott Silver and Phillips as screenwriters.
It blends prison drama, courtroom proceedings and musical sequences rather than simply extending the first film as a crime thriller. Phillips said the writing delved further into “the idea of identity” in his director’s statement for Venice. That focus is the key to deciding whether the sequel sounds appealing: it is more inward-looking and formally unusual than a straightforward escalation of the original.
Is Joker 2 really a musical?
Yes, it uses musical sequences as part of the storytelling, but it is also a prison and courtroom drama. Music is woven into the film’s treatment of Arthur and Lee rather than serving as a promise of a conventional, continuous song-and-dance musical. The film’s official site has separate links for its soundtrack and score; the Associated Press reported that Lady Gaga released the companion album Harlequin alongside the film.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If musical storytelling itself is a deal-breaker, expect the genre element to be prominent enough to shape the experience. If you are curious about seeing Phoenix and Gaga perform within a psychological drama, that unusual combination is one of the sequel’s main draws.
Why were reviews so divided?
The split reflects a genuine difference in what viewers may want from a Joker sequel. The film’s slower, character-focused approach and mixture of genres can feel like an ambitious change of direction or like a loss of momentum, depending on whether you value mood and performance over plot drive. AP critic Jake Coyle called it “remarkably inert given how combustible the original was”; that is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict.

Release-era figures show how sharply the response shifted, but they are historical snapshots rather than current ratings. The Associated Press reported that Rotten Tomatoes’ score fell from 63% at the Venice premiere to 33% by opening weekend in October 2024, and that ticket buyers gave the film a D CinemaScore. Apple TV’s listing displayed a 31% Tomatometer based on 373 reviews when accessed in 2026. Aggregator scores change as reviews and listings update, so read the current page and individual reviews rather than treating any one percentage as permanent.
Commercially, AP reported a $40 million domestic opening weekend based on studio estimates in October 2024. That is an opening-weekend figure, not the film’s final box office total. AP also reported that the production budget was disputed: Phillips told Variety it was below the reported $200 million, while other reports put it at $190 million. There is no single definitive budget figure established by those reports.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Watch it if you enjoy deliberate character studies, are interested in Phoenix and Gaga’s performances, and are willing to follow a story that uses musical set pieces to examine Arthur’s identity.
- Approach it cautiously if you liked the first Joker but mainly for its forward-moving crime plot. The sequel shifts toward institutional and courtroom drama.
- Skip it for now if you want a brisk thriller, sustained action, or a conventional comic-book continuation. Those are not the film’s main priorities.
Those are taste-based recommendations, not a claim that one response is correct. The first Joker is a useful comparison point, but the sequel is framed as a reinterpretation rather than a simple repeat of its structure.
How long is Joker: Folie à Deux, and what is its rating?
The Venice Biennale and studio listings give the runtime as 138 minutes; the AP review lists 139 minutes. The small difference reflects variations among listings, so plan for roughly two hours and 18 minutes. In the United States, the film is rated R for strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality and brief full nudity.
