Adam Copeland, known to WWE fans as Edge, said he assumed WWE would not allow him to appear during Cena’s retirement tour—but he also said he never asked to be part of it. That makes this an unpursued possibility, not a confirmed match that WWE formally rejected.
What did Edge say about appearing during Cena’s retirement tour?
Speaking with Ariel Helwani, Copeland was asked whether he thought WWE would say no to an appearance. He replied: “Yeah, I do. I can see it from all sides, I really can. John knew I was there in spirit. Him and I kind of made our bones on each other, and we’re both aware of that fact. Both of our careers would’ve been great, but I think that angle, that story, those two opponents propelled to a different place.”
Asked whether he explored making an appearance, Copeland answered: “No. I assumed, and a lot of these are assumptions, but having been there long enough and knowing how the mindset is there, I realized it ain’t going to happen. If it were up to me and John, sure.” Fightful published the exchange on August 18, 2026, in its transcription of the interview.
Did WWE reject a request for Cena and Edge to reunite?
The available account does not establish that Copeland made a request or that WWE formally turned one down. Copeland said he did not pursue an appearance and described his expectation as an assumption. Those details matter: a belief that WWE would refuse is not the same as a rejection after negotiations or a submitted proposal.

Bleacher Report’s Adam Wells reported on August 19, 2026, that Copeland believed AEW president Tony Khan “absolutely” would have allowed him to appear. The article also says Khan had confirmed WWE never reached out about letting Copeland wrestle Cena during the retirement run. That is Bleacher Report’s account; it does not establish that Copeland asked WWE and received a no. Its headline says WWE denied the match, but the article’s reported details describe an unpursued idea and an absence of contact, not a documented formal rejection. Read Bleacher Report’s report.
Is a Cena-versus-Edge match officially happening?
No. The August 2026 coverage is about whether Copeland might have appeared during Cena’s retirement tour; it does not announce a future match or confirm that one is being booked. The distinction is straightforward:

- Announced match: None is established by these reports.
- Appearance pursued: Copeland said he did not explore or pursue one.
- Unpursued possibility: Copeland assumed WWE would not allow it, while saying he and Cena would have been willing if the decision were theirs.
Why do fans connect Cena and Edge?
The possibility resonates because they had a major WWE rivalry. WWE’s official report records Edge defeating Cena in a Last Man Standing Match for the World Heavyweight Championship, with Big Show involved in the contest. That match is part of their history, not evidence of a new booking. WWE’s Backlash match report documents the result and rivalry context.
