Turning off the monitor can reduce the electricity used by the display, but it does not turn off the desktop. The computer still has to stay awake to encode and send the stream, so whether switching off the screen saves enough to matter depends on your actual equipment and electricity rate. Measure the setup at the wall while it is streaming, then calculate its energy cost.
What changes when you turn off the monitor?
The desktop and display are separate electrical loads. With the monitor off, the PC must remain operational for its encoder to transmit to YouTube; putting the computer to sleep would stop that work. ENERGY STAR distinguishes computer Off, Sleep and Idle states from monitor On, Sleep and Off states in its computer guidance and monitor guidance.
Turning off the screen therefore saves only the difference between the monitor’s on-state draw and its off or standby draw. It does not eliminate the desktop’s consumption. ENERGY STAR says, “A screen saver does not save energy”; some screen savers can keep the CPU from sleeping, and a screen saver is not the same as turning off the display.
What the monitor rating does—and does not—tell you
For displays that offer an Off Mode, ENERGY STAR’s criteria effective January 28, 2020 set a maximum of 0.5 W in that mode. That is a certification threshold, not a measurement of your monitor or a guarantee that its physical power switch and standby behavior draw the same amount.

Measure the real stream before estimating a bill
There is no reliable universal wattage for a desktop continuously encoding a YouTube stream. The result varies with the computer, encoding workload, settings, connected equipment and monitor. A desktop’s generic specifications—or measurements of a different playback device—cannot establish the draw of your actual streaming setup.
- Connect a plug-in electricity meter to the wall outlet, then connect the equipment you want to count. Include peripherals and network equipment consistently if you want them included in the estimate.
- Run the actual stream and record the setup’s average wall power with the monitor on.
- Keep the same stream and equipment running, turn the monitor off or put it in the standby state you actually use, and record average wall power again.
- Subtract the second reading from the first to estimate the monitor-state difference. Use the screen-off reading to estimate the continuing cost of the full setup with the display off.
A desktop video-energy study used a Kill-a-Watt meter for wall-power measurements, but its playback tests are not a substitute for measuring a livestream on your own equipment. A plug-in meter or electricity usage monitor can help answer the local measurement question; buying one is not required to use the calculation below.

Calculate the energy cost
Let P be average wall power in watts for the equipment being counted, H the hours it runs, and R your electricity price per kilowatt-hour:
- Energy used (kWh) = P × H ÷ 1,000.
- Estimated energy charge = (P × H ÷ 1,000) × R.
For continuous operation over a 365-day year, H is 8,760 hours, so annual energy is P × 8.76 kWh. This is a formula, not a typical desktop measurement or a quoted electricity rate. The simple charge calculation estimates only the energy-price component when one marginal rate applies; actual bills may also include fixed charges, time-of-use rates, taxes or tiered pricing.

To estimate the monitor-off savings, use the difference between the two measured average wattages in the same formula. Keep the stream, computer and counted peripherals the same in both measurements; otherwise the difference will not represent the monitor-state change.
Make sure the stream settings are representative
YouTube’s live encoder guidance says settings depend on ingestion resolution, frame rate and codec. Its current recommendations cover H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommend constant bitrate, and advise testing with representative video and monitoring stream health. These settings affect stream quality and reliability; the guidance does not give a desktop wattage estimate. Measure while using the settings and content you actually intend to stream.

Compare alternatives on total cost, not electricity alone
A fair comparison needs more than a device’s power draw. Consider measured wall energy under the same content and stream workload, operating hours and local electricity rate, upfront hardware and replacement costs, recurring service fees, whether the source is prerecorded media or a live camera, and the setup’s reliability and control requirements. The available product information does not establish a like-for-like cost ranking.
- Standalone hardware encoder: YouTube describes both software and standalone encoders. Its hardware encoder listing describes AJA HELO Plus and a PlayToStream function for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is an option for prerecorded content, but there is no established cost advantage without comparing its measured energy use and full costs with your current setup.
- Cloud service: StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos, not a camera feed. It is #1 among the ways discussed here to keep prerecorded video live 24/7: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. That does not mean it is cheaper for every viewer; compare your measured desktop electricity cost with the service fee and any other costs that apply.
StreamNeo’s service page describes the workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features apply to every plan; only the billing length changes. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide.

Common mistakes that distort the estimate
- Assuming the sleeping desktop keeps streaming: Sleep is a low-power state for inactivity, not a way to keep an encoder transmitting. Leave the computer operational for a desktop-based stream.
- Using a screen saver as a power-saving setting: ENERGY STAR says a screen saver does not save energy. Use the monitor’s actual off or sleep state if you want to measure that difference.
- Using a monitor certification limit as your monitor’s reading: The 0.5 W figure applies to the specified ENERGY STAR Off Mode criterion, not necessarily your hardware’s actual state.
- Comparing inconsistent setups: If a router, capture device or other equipment is counted in only one measurement, the difference is not a clean estimate of switching the display off.
- Calling an alternative cheaper without its full cost: A lower measured draw alone does not account for hardware purchase or replacement, service fees, or differences in what the setup can stream.
What the energy figures do not cover
The calculation estimates electricity use for the equipment included in the measurement. It does not include a changed internet plan, hardware purchase, or service fee. ENERGY STAR’s current computer guidance mentions potential savings of $15 per year from enabling power management on an ENERGY STAR-certified desktop; that is general guidance, not a forecast of savings from switching off a monitor during a YouTube stream. Likewise, NRDC’s 2019 report hosted by IEA 4E uses a seven-hours-on, 17-hours-in-standby duty-cycle assumption for its studied consumer streaming devices; those are not desktop livestream measurements.
