Spoilers for the House of the Dragon season-two finale and George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. The finale suggests that Rhaena Targaryen may take on at least part of Nettles’s role from the book: Rhaena finds Sheepstealer, a dragon associated with Nettles in the source. But showrunner Ryan Condal has not confirmed that the characters are being merged or that Nettles will never appear.
What the finale shows—and what it does not confirm
In the closing sequence of the season-two finale, Rhaena encounters Sheepstealer without a rider. In Fire & Blood, Sheepstealer is associated with Nettles, a distinct character. That difference is why viewers have read the scene as a sign that Rhaena may inherit some of Nettles’s storyline.
The scene is the central on-screen evidence for the theory, not proof that Rhaena and Nettles are identical in the adaptation. Den of Geek’s August 6, 2024 report describes the apparent direction while leaving the question open: its report on Rhaena, Nettles, and Condal’s comments.
How the book characters differ
Rhaena is Daemon Targaryen’s daughter. Nettles is a separate character in Fire & Blood, associated with Sheepstealer. If the series consolidates their stories, that would bring a character with an established family relationship to Daemon into material that belongs to Nettles in the book. The change could affect character dynamics, but the finale does not establish which scenes, relationships, or events Rhaena might take over.
#1 Best Overall
Readers can compare the distinct book characters and their accounts in Fire & Blood, the source book. The series is an adaptation rather than a scene-by-scene reproduction, and its choices do not by themselves settle every question left open by the book.
What Ryan Condal has said
Asked about the apparent direction, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal did not confirm a merge. As reported by Den of Geek, he said: “Given where we are in the storytelling, I think that’s a, ‘Please stay tuned and keep watching the story.’” He also characterized the series as a television interpretation of a history whose accounts can be disputed, saying viewers who read the book are free to interpret it for themselves.
That leaves room for later developments. The available comments do not establish that Nettles has been permanently removed from the show, or that Rhaena will inherit every part of her book storyline.

The series has changed and compressed parts of its source material, but those examples do not reveal the specific rationale for the Rhaena and Sheepstealer scene.

- Maelor: At the season-two premiere, Condal told TV Insider, “In this timeline, Maelor hasn’t been born yet.” He also discussed compressing the chronology to make production and recasting manageable. This explains Maelor’s absence in that timeline; it does not confirm a decision about Nettles.
- Blood and Cheese: The show changes details of the book account, including making Aemond the intended target. TV Guide reported Condal’s explanation of the change, while TV Insider compared the episode with the source account. These are examples of adaptation choices, not evidence that Rhaena definitively replaces Nettles.
Condal has likewise described the adaptation as an interpretation rather than an objective account of fictional history. A 2026 GamesRadar+ interview discusses that approach and the source’s interpretive nature, but does not turn the finale’s implication into confirmation.
