Flappy Bird has returned in a new version run by the Flappy Bird Foundation, but creator Dong Nguyen says he has no connection to it. The Foundation’s current Telegram channel promotes a playable Telegram release and directs Android users to search the Epic Games Store; it does not establish current iOS or browser availability in every region. The comeback is real, but it is not Nguyen’s return to his 2013 game.
What is Flappy Bird, and what is making a comeback?
The original Flappy Bird was a one-button endless runner released by Dong Nguyen in 2013. Players tapped to keep a bird aloft and guide it through gaps between pipes. Temple Now reported that the game reached 90 million downloads at its peak. Temple Now
The current revival is a separate project presented by the Flappy Bird Foundation, which says it stewards the brand. Its existence does not mean the original app has returned unchanged, or that Nguyen has resumed work on it.

Why did the original Flappy Bird disappear?
Nguyen took the original off app stores on February 10, 2014. Temple Now describes the decision in the context of unwanted attention, public criticism and Nguyen’s concerns about the game’s addictive nature; it should not be reduced to one definitive cause. Temple Now

Temple Now quotes video-game developer and Temple University adjunct assistant professor Thomas Sharpe, who said parents had told Nguyen that the game’s addictive quality was hurting children’s productivity. Sharpe interpreted Nguyen’s removal announcement as reflecting guilt over that pressure. That is Sharpe’s account of Nguyen’s motivation, not a separate statement from Nguyen in the article.
Did Dong Nguyen endorse or sell the new game?
No. In a public post reported by GameSpot on September 16, 2024, Nguyen wrote: “No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything. I also don’t support crypto.” His statement rejects both a connection to the revival and support for crypto. GameSpot

The rights story reported for the comeback is about the Flappy Bird name and trademark, not a demonstrated uncomplicated purchase of all copyrights in Nguyen’s original game. The Foundation says the mark passed from Mobile Media Partners to Gametech Holdings and then to the Foundation in August 2024. Ars Technica covered the legal contest preceding the transfer. What is known about crypto in the revival?
Crypto was part of the 2024 controversy: Ars Technica documented Web3 and token references, and GameSpot reported that the Foundation’s response did not settle the questions those references raised. Nguyen’s opposition is explicit in his post. These reports describe concerns or plans discussed at the time, not proof that the current playable version has a token, requires a wallet or includes crypto features. Ars Technica; GameSpot
