Hugh Grant’s Mr. Reed is a long way from the romantic-comedy roles that made him famous. In Heretic (2024), he plays a seemingly courteous man who draws two young missionaries into a disturbing test of faith, persuasion, and control.
For viewers in the United States, the film is currently available through several subscription services, as well as for digital rental and purchase. There is no free legal streaming option listed at the latest availability check.

Some older pages refer to HBO Max as Max. Warner Bros. Discovery restored the HBO Max name for the U.S. service in 2025, although older listings and search results may continue to use “Max.”
How much does Heretic cost to rent or buy?
If you do not have one of the subscription services, the 2024 A24 film is listed for digital rental or purchase through several major storefronts.
| Option | Services listed | Current U.S. pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Rent | Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Fandango at Home, Google Play | About $4.99–$5.99 |
| Buy | Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Fandango at Home, Google Play | About $19.99 |
Google Play currently lists a $4.99 rental and a $19.99 4K purchase. Retailers may show different prices, formats, or video-quality options depending on the device and account. A rental normally gives you a limited viewing window after you start playback, so check the store’s terms before paying.

Is Heretic free to stream?
No—not through a free legal U.S. streaming service at the latest check. JustWatch does not currently list a free option for the Hugh Grant film. A subscription you already pay for, such as HBO Max or a qualifying YouTube TV package, is different from a free ad-supported listing.
Be cautious with search results promising the movie at no cost. Free listings can refer to a different title, an expired promotion, or an unofficial site that is not authorized to distribute the film.
Make sure you have the right Heretic
Several films use the title Heretic or a closely related title. The one covered here is the 2024 A24 thriller starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East. It runs for 1 hour 51 minutes and is rated R for bloody violence.
Rank #3
That distinction explains some of the conflicting streaming claims online. A page saying that Heretic is free on Tubi may be referring to another film, including a 2012 or 2018 production—not the Hugh Grant movie. Likewise, current U.S. listings do not include Hulu, despite older pages repeating that claim.
What is the film about?
Two young missionaries, played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, arrive at the home of Mr. Reed, portrayed by Hugh Grant. What begins as a routine religious conversation becomes increasingly controlled and threatening as Reed challenges their beliefs and limits their ability to leave.
The setup makes Heretic especially relevant to viewers interested in documentaries and real-world investigations of belief, persuasion, and coercive influence. It is a scripted psychological horror film rather than a documentary, but its central tension comes from a recognizable question: what happens when an apparently reasonable debate takes place on one person’s carefully controlled terms?

Where should you watch it?
- Check HBO Max first if you already have the service. It is the most straightforward subscription option currently listed.
- Check YouTube TV or a Cinemax channel subscription if either is already part of your household’s package.
- Compare rental prices across Amazon Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Google Play. A $4.99 rental is currently cheaper than the $5.99 price shown by some storefronts.
- Buy only if you expect to rewatch it. The listed digital purchase price is about $19.99, making a rental the better value for a single viewing.
Streaming catalogs and prices change, so confirm the final price and format on the service you intend to use before starting the transaction.
