Public remarks suggest Heath Ledger’s family welcomed his daughter, Matilda, and her mother, Michelle Williams. But the available reporting does not establish how close Matilda is today to particular Ledger relatives or how often they see one another. Those are separate questions: the family’s past public welcome is documented; the details of Matilda’s present-day private relationships are not.
What is publicly known about the Ledger family’s relationship with Matilda?
The clearest reported indication of a welcome comes from Heath Ledger’s father, Kim Ledger. E! News reported around 2013 that Kim described Matilda’s financial well-being as an “absolute priority” and called Michelle Williams an “integral part” of the family. The E! page is the source for those reported remarks; they are evidence of the family’s stated concern and inclusion at that time, not proof of the present-day shape of Matilda’s relationships with individual relatives. E! News’ report.

Heath Ledger and Williams had Matilda in October 2005. Ledger died in January 2008, when Matilda was a toddler. ABC News’ 2025 report and Vanity Fair’s 2025 article provide that context.
What has Michelle Williams said about Matilda and her father?
Williams’s public comments speak to her own memories of Ledger and her bond with Matilda. They do not report Matilda’s views about her father’s relatives.

Williams on Matilda growing up without her father
In 2016, Williams spoke about the lasting pain of Ledger’s absence from Matilda’s life, saying, “I mean, it just won’t ever be right.” ABC News reported her remarks.
Williams on the bond she shares with Matilda
In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, Williams called Matilda her “best audience” and said, “She is the person I have spent my adult life with.” Williams also described moving with her daughter away from Brooklyn to feel less observed by paparazzi. These comments show how Williams has described their relationship, not how Matilda relates to Ledger’s family. The Guardian interview.

In a 2025 discussion of Ledger, Williams said, “Thank God there’s Matilda.” ABC News reported the comment from an Armchair Expert episode. The same article recounts Williams’s earlier explanation of what she tells Matilda about her father: “Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes.” ABC News’ May 19, 2025 report.

The cited reporting does not document Matilda’s current private relationship with specific members of Ledger’s family or how frequently they meet. Williams’s comments describe her own relationship with her daughter, while Kim Ledger’s reported remarks reflect a public statement from years earlier. Neither establishes present-day contact.

- A feature-length documentary celebrating the life of the actor, the artist, and the icon, Heath Ledger
That lack of public detail should not be read as evidence of distance or conflict. Matilda’s private life is not fully visible from interviews or celebrity coverage, and the available information supports a careful conclusion: Ledger’s family was publicly described as embracing Matilda and Williams, but Matilda’s current closeness with individual relatives has not been established publicly.
