Short answer: no official source establishes Hatsune Miku as nonbinary. Crypton Future Media, the company that licenses her, presents her with she/her pronouns and a conventional female-coded character profile. Nonbinary and gender-fluid readings exist, but they are interpretations of a character whose gender is shaped by her creators, performers and fans. They are not an identity statement from the official side.
What Crypton’s official profile says
Crypton Future Media describes Hatsune Miku as “a singing voice synthesizer” and as a character at the center of a collaborative creative culture. Its official English profile, checked in October 2026, uses “she” throughout and lists a character profile that includes age 16, height 158 cm, weight 42 kg, a preferred tempo of 70–150 BPM and a voice range of A3–E5. The profile does not state a date for these figures, so treat them as descriptive character data rather than current measurements.
Crypton also identifies itself as Miku’s official licensor. A companion official portal, Piapro, says that Piapro Characters, including Hatsune Miku, are official characters of singing voice synthesizer software developed and owned by Crypton, and it describes Piapro as a space where people with different skills share and create together.
Taken together, these pages establish official feminine framing. They do not establish a personal gender identity. Miku is a software character, and a pronoun in a product profile describes how the character is presented, not what a person has declared about their own inner life.

What the official material does not say
In the official English profile and the Piapro material, there is no statement that Miku is nonbinary, genderqueer, gender-fluid or agender. There is also no attributed quote from Crypton or a named creator addressing whether she is nonbinary. That silence is worth reporting accurately: it means the company has not made a claim either way on that specific question in the sources reviewed. It does not mean the company has rejected nonbinary readings.
This also means you should not treat a single fan work, song or project-specific portrayal as Miku’s universal identity. A cover art style, a stage performance or a fan story can present a different gender coding, and those choices do not change what the official profile says.

Why readers see nonbinary and gender-fluid readings
Miku exists across several forms at once: a voice synthesizer, a visual character, a figure in songs, performances and artwork, and a subject of commentary. Crypton itself emphasizes collaborative creation around her, so much of what audiences associate with her comes from people other than the company.
Academic work has examined this directly. In “‘She’s Like the World’s Barbie Doll’: How Semiotic Labor Reifies the Gendered Labor Assumptions of Hatsune Miku,” published in the Popular Culture Studies Journal (vol. 9, no. 1, copyright 2021), Carrielynn D. Reinhard and Christopher J. Olson analyze how Miku’s gender is formed through the actions and language of the company, fans, researchers and journalists. They describe Crypton’s presentation as female-coded and argue that widespread discourse tends to reinforce that coding, while the character’s identity is also shaped by the people who take part in her culture.

That is a scholarly interpretation of cultural representation. It is not an official declaration of Miku’s identity, and it does not claim that she is nonbinary. Its value for this question is that it explains why a character can be read in more than one way without the official profile changing.

How to evaluate a specific claim
- Identify the source. Is it Crypton’s official material, a licensed project, a fan creation, or scholarship?
- Check the scope. Does the claim describe Miku generally, or one song, performance or artwork?
- Check the wording. A pronoun or a visual style is different from an explicit statement such as “Miku is nonbinary.”
- Check whether a creator or the company attributes the claim to itself. If no named speaker is quoted, treat it as interpretation.
Applying these steps to the common question “Does Miku use she/her pronouns?” gives a clear result: the official profile does, and the character is consistently presented that way in the material reviewed. Applying them to “Is Miku nonbinary?” gives the opposite of a yes: the official sources do not say so, so the honest answer is that the question is open to interpretation rather than settled by the company.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practical reading of a nonbinary or gender-fluid reading
If you encounter a claim that Miku is nonbinary or gender-fluid, you can take it as a reading of the character rather than a fact about her. That reading may be meaningful to the person who holds it, and creative works are free to explore gender in ways the official profile does not. The useful distinction is between a reading that is open about being a reading and a claim that presents it as canon. The first is a fair interpretation; the second needs a source that the official material does not provide.

Avoid two shortcuts. Do not infer Miku’s inner identity from her voice, her appearance or her profile statistics, since none of these are self-identification. And do not assume that because the official profile uses she/her, every creative work must follow it. Both steps go beyond the evidence.
The question is ultimately about how a software character is made meaningful by the people around her. The official answer is that she is presented as female-coded and that no official nonbinary identity has been declared. Beyond that, readings depend on the work and the viewer.
To explore the character’s creative ecosystem directly, start with Crypton’s official English profile and the Piapro portal, then compare them with the specific works you want to understand.
