There is no universal cheaper option. A Google Cloud estimate depends on the VM configuration, region, disk and other billable resources; a home-PC estimate depends on measured power draw and your electricity tariff. Compare the full costs for the same hours and stream settings. Google lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer as no charge under its Google-product transfer category, so that specific transfer is not the main cost driver.
Compare the monthly costs on equal terms
Use the same operating hours, stream quality and uptime target for both options. For Google Cloud, total the VM and any separately billed resources. For a home PC, calculate electricity using its actual wall power under the playlist-and-encoder workload, then include only genuinely incremental costs such as a new internet plan. A lower estimated bill does not establish equivalent reliability or hands-on effort.
Estimate Google Cloud Compute Engine
- Choose the Google Cloud region, VM family and size, operating system, disk and billing arrangement. Compute Engine pricing varies by configuration and usage; the instance pricing page does not include some separately billed resources, including disks and networking. Check the current configuration and charges in Google Cloud’s VM instance pricing and its pricing calculator before committing.
- Multiply the applicable VM hourly rate by the hours you intend to run. Use the actual hours in your month, or state that you are using 730 hours as an approximation.
- Add the disk and any other applicable resource charges. Google lists data transfer from a VM to YouTube as no charge under the VM-to-Google-product category, whether the VM uses an external or internal IP address; do not add an egress charge for that specific transfer category. Estimate home-PC electricity
Measure the computer’s average wall draw while it runs the actual playlist and encoder workload. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help you obtain this input; no particular model is required or recommended here. Then calculate:

Use your household’s actual tariff. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s electricity tables publish residential prices by geography and period, but a national or seasonal figure is only context—not a substitute for your utility’s rate. If the PC would be on anyway, decide whether to count its full power use or only the additional draw caused by streaming, and keep that accounting consistent.

Match the streaming settings to the workload
YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. Pick the target settings first, then make sure either the VM or PC can sustain them. Test available upload bitrate and monitor stream health during operation rather than sizing a machine from a generic minimum.

Plan archives for sessions under 12 hours
YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The page recommends keeping a local archive backup. A playlist intended to run all month therefore needs an explicit session-restart and recording plan; a single uninterrupted month-long session is not a safe way to guarantee a complete replay. Price both options for the same workload, then weigh reliability and required supervision separately from direct dollars. Cloud billing can exceed a simple VM-only estimate when separately billed resources apply; a home estimate can mislead if it uses idle power rather than the measured streaming workload.
