Netflix’s adaptation changes Michael to Michaela and has announced Francesca and Michaela as the leads of Season 5’s same-gender romance. That makes the show’s central storyline queer, but the official sources cited here do not say whether Francesca identifies as gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
What the books establish about Francesca
Netflix identifies Julia Quinn’s When He Was Wicked as the sixth Bridgerton novel and describes it as the story centered on Francesca’s relationship with Michael Stirling, John’s cousin and Francesca’s close companion. The book’s central romance is between Francesca and Michael. The sources cited here do not establish Francesca as gay.
Francesca’s introversion or sense of being different does not, by itself, establish a sexual orientation. In an interview about the adaptation, showrunner Jess Brownell distinguished the novel from her own interpretation: “In the book, it’s really just about her introversion. But to me, that sense of feeling a little bit different and not knowing why is part of the queer story.” That is Brownell’s interpretation of the character for the series, not a statement Julia Quinn made about Francesca’s identity in the books.
How the Netflix series changes Michael’s story
The adaptation changes Michael Stirling into Michaela Stirling. The show introduces John Stirling and gives him a quiet courtship with Francesca; they marry, and John introduces Francesca to Michaela, his cousin.

In Netflix’s account of the Season 3 finale, Francesca forgets her married surname while greeting Michaela. Brownell said Francesca would explore “whether or not there is in fact something missing” between her and John. The scene invites a queer reading, but that interview did not definitively label Francesca’s identity.
Actor Hannah Dodd, who plays Francesca, described her as feeling safe with and loving John while being surprised by her intense reaction to Michaela. That is Dodd’s account of the scene, not a definitive identity label for the character.

What Netflix has announced for Season 5
Netflix’s Season 4 character guide recounts John’s death, Francesca’s grief, her growing friendship with Michaela, and Michaela’s departure. Netflix later announced Francesca and Michaela as the leads of Season 5, describing it as the series’ first season centered on a same-gender couple. The announced story begins after John’s death and is inspired by When He Was Wicked.
Brownell described the season this way: “It is a queer story, but it is — thematically and tonally — very much a Bridgerton season.” Netflix and Shondaland have reported a 2027 premiere for Season 5; release schedules can change.
