What kind of fish is Flounder?
In Disney’s 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, Flounder is Ariel’s fish friend. Walt Disney Animation Studios describes him as Ariel’s “best friend” and calls him a fish, but does not name a biological species. Disney’s official film page gives no more specific classification.
Disney Japan’s official Flounder character page likewise describes him as Ariel’s childhood friend and best friend, and identifies him as a fish without specifying a species. The name “Flounder” alone is not evidence that he is a real flounder.
What does “I’m not a guppy” mean?
Disney News includes Flounder’s line, “I’m not a guppy,” in its list of quotes from the film. It answers the question as a piece of dialogue, but it does not establish what species he is instead. In other words, the line is a joke, not a taxonomic identification.

What is a real guppy?
A real guppy is the species Poecilia reticulata. FishBase records it in freshwater and brackish-water environments in its field guide summary; the U.S. Geological Survey also identifies Poecilia reticulata as the guppy in its species profile. These sources describe the real fish, not Flounder.
Is Flounder based on a specific real fish?
The official Disney descriptions cited here do not identify Flounder as a guppy, a biological flounder, or any other named species. His appearance may invite comparisons, but resemblance alone does not establish a species or a confirmed real-fish inspiration.
