Macy Gray has publicly discussed having bipolar disorder. In a May 2022 episode of Bialik Breakdown, she spoke about her diagnosis and recalled that it followed an incident and a hospital visit while she was in school. That account describes what Gray has said about her past; it does not establish her current mental health.
What Macy Gray has said about bipolar disorder
On the May 17, 2022 episode of Bialik Breakdown, titled “Macy Gray: Listen to the Angels,” Gray discussed her bipolar diagnosis. In the episode transcript, she recalls that she was not diagnosed until she was in school, after an incident led to a hospital visit. Bipolar UK also noted in January 2025 that Gray had discussed having bipolar disorder in a 2016 Psychology Today interview. Bipolar UK’s response to headlines about singer Macy Gray.
What this does—and does not—tell us
These public comments support saying that Gray has discussed a bipolar diagnosis. They do not reveal her current clinical status, symptoms, treatment, the severity of any condition, or a diagnosis subtype. A past disclosure cannot answer whether she is experiencing symptoms now.

Nor can a person’s lyrics, mannerisms, public appearances, or tabloid headlines establish a mental health diagnosis. The available material does not support an outside assessment of Gray’s present condition.

Asking whether something is “mentally wrong” with someone turns a health condition into a judgment about the person. Bipolar UK has criticized coverage that sensationalizes Gray’s disclosure and cautioned against suggesting that people with bipolar disorder are inherently unpredictable or that a diagnosis defines their character.
