Yes. Escape at Dannemora is an eight-episode scripted miniseries based on the real escape of convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, on June 5–6, 2015. It dramatizes documented events rather than reproducing an official record scene for scene. For the clearest account of what happened, start with the New York State Inspector General’s investigation.
What happened in the real Dannemora escape?
Shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2015, Matt and Sweat escaped from their adjacent cells in the prison’s high-security section. They cut through the rear walls, descended behind the cells to a subterranean level, and made their way through prison tunnels and openings. Around midnight, they emerged from a manhole on a street in Dannemora, about a block beyond the prison wall. A correction officer discovered the men missing at 5:17 a.m. on June 6.
The Inspector General’s report described it as the first escape from Clinton’s high-security section in more than 100 years. The route was not simply a tunnel dug straight to freedom: the men moved through a series of spaces and existing underground passages before reaching the manhole.
Who helped the prisoners, and how did the escape become possible?
Joyce Mitchell’s direct assistance
Matt and Sweat had been plotting since January 2015. They enlisted Joyce Mitchell, a civilian supervisor in Tailor Shop 1. She bought six hacksaw blades for less than $5 and smuggled them into the prison after gate officers failed to search her bag. The Inspector General identified her as a willful participant in the plan.

Security failures and Eugene Palmer’s role
The report also said correction officer Eugene Palmer’s reckless actions assisted the escape. Among the failures it described were not frisking returning inmates and not requiring them to pass through a metal detector. The Inspector General distinguished these acts of assistance from the wider institutional conditions: longstanding breakdowns in basic security and executive management’s failure to correct known deficiencies enabled the plan. The report concluded that the escape could not have happened without those broader failures.
How did the manhunt end?
Richard Matt was fatally shot by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in Malone on June 26, 2015. David Sweat was wounded and apprehended by a New York State Police sergeant in Constable on June 28, after he failed to comply with an order to halt. Matt was killed; Sweat survived and was taken into custody.

The accounts differ on the scale of the search. The Inspector General’s 2016 report says more than 1,300 local, state, federal, and Canadian officers were involved at times. The New York State Police retrospective says more than 1,500 officers were used. The agencies do not explain the difference in counting, so the figures should remain attributed to their respective sources.
The Inspector General’s 2016 report estimates approximately $23 million in New York State law-enforcement overtime; that figure excludes costs incurred by federal and local agencies, other states, and other countries. It also records $573,000 in additional prison repairs and security measures.

How closely does the miniseries follow the documented story?
Escape at Dannemora is a dramatization, not a documentary. Its factual foundation is the 2015 escape and its aftermath, but scripted scenes, dialogue, and character-focused storytelling should not be treated as a verbatim account of every event. The state’s 2025 anniversary release says the Inspector General’s comprehensive 150-page report provided a roadmap for the miniseries; that establishes the report’s influence, not the exact accuracy of every scene.
Ben Stiller directed and executive produced all eight episodes. In a 2018 Television Academy interview, he said, “I was nervous about not getting it right, because it was so outside my experience.” The Television Academy also reported that production filmed exterior scenes at Clinton’s North Yard, used real prison workers, former prisoners, and officials involved in the manhunt as extras, and reopened manholes that had been sealed since the breakout. These production details add texture, but do not turn the series into a factual record.
