Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery began streaming on Netflix on December 12, 2025, but the available official release information does not establish that it became an “instant streaming juggernaut”: it gives no audience total or launch ranking. The film is the third Benoit Blanc mystery, with Daniel Craig returning as the detective and Rian Johnson as writer-director.
What is Knives Out 3 called?
The official title is Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. “Knives Out 3” is a convenient shorthand, but this is the third film centered on Benoit Blanc, not the movie’s title. Netflix’s title page lists the film in its catalog; its availability and displayed metadata can vary by region.
Is Wake Up Dead Man streaming on Netflix?
Yes. Netflix released the film for streaming on December 12, 2025, after select theatrical screenings began November 26, 2025, according to Netflix Tudum. The Netflix US title page lists a runtime of 2 hours 26 minutes and a PG-13 rating; those are US catalog details, not a guarantee of identical listings in every country.
What is the movie about?
Blanc travels to a church in upstate New York after Monsignor Jefferson Wicks is killed during a Good Friday service. Father Jud Duplenticy, a young priest sent to assist Wicks, becomes a suspect in what Netflix describes as a seemingly impossible murder. Blanc investigates the case amid a church community and its buried tensions. Netflix Tudum’s film feature identifies Josh O’Connor as Father Jud and Josh Brolin as Wicks.

How does it differ from the other Benoit Blanc films?
| Film | Setting and case context | Stated distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Knives Out | A family mansion and an inheritance conflict | The first Benoit Blanc mystery |
| Glass Onion | A Greek island and a circle shaped by tech-world excess | The second Benoit Blanc mystery |
| Wake Up Dead Man | A church in upstate New York and a murder during a Good Friday service | The third mystery, focused on questions of belief |
These setting distinctions are described in Netflix Tudum’s overview of the film. The new setting shifts the central conflict away from a family inheritance or an island gathering and toward faith, guilt and moral judgment.

What tone and themes did Rian Johnson describe?
Johnson characterized this entry as more personal and grounded, with a gothic atmosphere built around an old stone church and graveyards. He said, “This film charts [Blanc’s] most personal journey yet.” He also described its mystery influences as reaching back before Agatha Christie to Edgar Allan Poe. Those are the writer-director’s descriptions of his intentions, not a claim of critical consensus. Netflix Tudum’s September 2025 feature covers his comments and the film’s themes.

That phrase is not substantiated by the release information cited here. Netflix confirms the streaming date and availability, but the official materials and Associated Press coverage cited below do not provide a viewing-hours total, launch rank or other audience measure establishing a record-breaking debut. A release on a major streaming service is not, by itself, evidence of a hit at that scale.

Critical response is a separate question from viewership. In an Associated Press streaming roundup, reviewer Mark Kennedy called the film “a gloomy and clunky outing that may test fans’ faith in the filmmaker.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus verdict or a measure of audience performance.
