Yes—with one important clarification: The Mighty Nein is not a direct sequel about Vox Machina. It adapts Critical Role’s second campaign, following a different party in the same Exandria setting. That gives the animated series room to stand on its own while retaining a clear link to The Legend of Vox Machina: the franchise, the tabletop-storytelling roots and the principal cast.
How The Mighty Nein connects to Vox Machina
Critical Role’s animated series adapt two different campaigns. The Legend of Vox Machina draws on Campaign One; The Mighty Nein draws on Campaign Two. In Critical Role’s long-form, improvisational story world, those campaigns follow different adventuring parties rather than one group continuing its journey. So “spinoff” works in the broad sense of a companion series within the same franchise, but not if it suggests that The Mighty Nein picks up where Vox Machina left off. The new show introduces its own group, setting and central danger.
What makes the new series its own story
A different party in Wildemount
The Mighty Nein are a band of fugitives and outcasts brought together in Wildemount, a continent unsettled by conflict between powerful countries. Their starting point differs from Vox Machina’s, giving the animated adaptation a new set of characters and political circumstances rather than simply repeating the first series’ setup. A Beacon-centered threat
The animated series’ official premise puts an arcane relic called the Beacon at the center of the danger: it falls into the wrong hands, threatening the realm and reality. That gives the story a distinct engine, even as both adaptations draw on Critical Role’s fantasy world. The official Mighty Nein page provides the series premise and format details.
What it shares with The Legend of Vox Machina
The strongest bridge is the creative continuity. The official Mighty Nein cast listing names Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham. Amazon named those same principal Critical Role performers in its 2019 announcement for The Legend of Vox Machina, which also identified cast members as executive producers.

That overlap gives viewers a familiar ensemble behind a different party and story. It does not, by itself, establish that the shows have the same tone, pacing, quality or audience response. The official material supports a connection in franchise and principal performers, not a claim that one series is a precise stylistic match for the other.
Do you need to watch Vox Machina first?
The official descriptions present The Mighty Nein as an adaptation of Campaign Two, with its own party and conflict; they do not state that watching The Legend of Vox Machina is required first. If you are new to Critical Role’s animated series, you can approach The Mighty Nein as its own story. Watching Vox Machina first is an option for seeing the earlier campaign adaptation, not a stated prerequisite.

Where to watch and what to expect
Critical Role’s current animation page says all episodes of season one are available on Prime Video and describes episodes as 45 minutes long. Prime Video’s series page lists it as 2025 animation programming and provides episode runtimes and synopses. Streaming catalogs can differ by territory, so check the local Prime Video listing for access and current episode availability.
An optional companion for fans
Readers who want a character-focused addition beyond the show can look into Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins—Mollymauk Tealeaf, a graphic novel identified in Penguin Random House’s publisher sales-sheet listing. It is optional related reading, not required background for the animated series.

The Mighty Nein has a sound basis for standing beside The Legend of Vox Machina: it adapts another Critical Role campaign, introduces a separate party and conflict, and retains the principal performers associated with the earlier adaptation. That makes it a companion rather than a continuation. The available official information does not establish comparative reviews, audience reception or a performance figure, so the case for “worthy” rests on that distinct identity and creative continuity—not on a claim that it has already matched or surpassed Vox Machina.
