The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says evidence about screen use in general cannot establish that this particular show causes harm—or provides a developmental benefit. For parents, the more useful questions are how much a child watches, what viewing replaces, and whether an adult helps make it interactive.
What is known about CoComelon and child development?
The AAP’s CoComelon-specific guidance, updated July 13, 2025, says researchers have not directly studied whether watching the show has positive or negative effects on toddler development. There is therefore no CoComelon-specific finding that it damages attention, causes developmental delays, or improves learning.
That is different from saying the show is proven harmless or beneficial. It means the evidence does not support a confident verdict about CoComelon itself. Broader studies of children’s screen use can offer context, but they do not answer what this one program does.
What do experts say about the show?
Commentary about CoComelon is mixed, and should not be mistaken for clinical evidence. The AAP notes concerns raised by critics about the show’s pace, attention-capturing features, and educational depth.

In a March 2022 TIME report, Dimitri Christakis, director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at Seattle Children’s Research Institute, criticized the show’s educational quality. Other child-development experts quoted in the article considered CoComelon no more problematic than most children’s television. Those are expert assessments, not findings from a controlled study of CoComelon’s effects.
TIME also reported social-media claims that children became “addicted” to the show or experienced “withdrawal” when it was turned off. Susan Linn, author of Consuming Kids, told TIME, “It’s not that CoComelon is addictive,” while cautioning that children can come to rely on screens for stimulation and soothing. This is commentary about children’s screen habits, not a clinical diagnosis tied to CoComelon.

What broader screen-time research can—and can’t—tell parents
The AAP’s October 16, 2023, overview summarizes findings about screen exposure in young children. These are associations across media use, not proof that screens caused an outcome or that CoComelon produces it.
- Meta-analyses found that longer screen use and screen use at night were associated with poorer sleep among infants and toddlers.
- A review of 42 studies linked overall screen time and background television with lower language skills. Educational content and viewing with a parent or caregiver were associated with stronger language skills.
- Across 87 studies, the AAP describes the relationship between screen time and behavior problems as very small.
The AAP cautions that study designs make it difficult to determine the direction of effects. For example, an association does not establish whether screen use affects a child’s sleep or language, whether children with particular needs use screens differently, or whether other factors contribute.

Population figures also should not be read as evidence about one show. Common Sense Media’s 2025 census summary reported about 2.5 hours of daily screen time among children age eight and under; that figure covers media use generally, not CoComelon viewing.
How much screen time is recommended by age?
The AAP’s 2016 policy statement, “Media and Young Minds,” gives different guidance for different ages:
Rank #4

| Age | AAP guidance |
|---|---|
| Younger than 18 months | Discourage screen media other than video chatting. |
| 2–5 years | Limit screen use to no more than one hour a day of high-quality programming. Co-view, help the child understand what they are seeing, and connect it to the world around them. |
These recommendations are about screen media overall, not a CoComelon-specific limit. The cited guidance does not specify a recommendation for 18-month-olds through age one year, so the two age bands above should not be treated as a complete rule for every child under five.

The AAP’s CoComelon guidance suggests treating an episode as a chance to connect, rather than leaving a young child to watch alone whenever possible. Try one or two of these during or after viewing:

- Connect something on screen to your child’s life: “We saw a bus like that on our walk.”
- When the screen goes off, offer a related activity such as singing together, pretend play, blocks, puzzles, shape sorters, or active play.
These are practical ways to bring conversation and play into media use; they are not evidence that CoComelon itself teaches a particular skill.
How to decide whether viewing is working for your family
Instead of trying to label the show categorically “good” or “bad,” consider its place in your child’s day. The AAP recommends attending to content quality, caregiver involvement, and whether media use displaces interaction or play.
- Notice what viewing replaces. Consider whether it is cutting into sleep, conversation, active play, or time together.
- Pay attention to the viewing context. When possible, watch with your child, talk about what is happening, and skip ads where they appear.
- Look at the child, not online labels. If turning off a show regularly leads to difficult transitions, consider a predictable stopping point and an appealing offline activity. That observation alone does not establish addiction or a CoComelon-specific effect.
- Compare programs on concrete features. Age suitability, educational design, pace, opportunities for caregiver interaction, and what the viewing displaces are more useful criteria than declaring one show universally safe or harmful. The available sources do not establish a controlled developmental comparison between CoComelon and another named program.
Bottom line on whether CoComelon is bad for kids
Experts disagree about CoComelon’s pace and educational value, but there is no direct research establishing that the show harms—or benefits—toddler development. Use age-appropriate screen guidance, consider what viewing displaces, and add conversation and offline play when you can.
