There is a small discrepancy in the published runtime for The Odyssey: a July 7, 2026 Los Angeles Times interview reported 2 hours 53 minutes, one minute longer than AP’s later figure. The reports therefore do not give exactly the same runtime; the comparison above uses AP’s later report, which also states both films’ runtimes. Los Angeles Times, July 7, 2026.
What does the “11 miles of film” figure mean?
The Los Angeles Times reported that the preferred IMAX film version of The Odyssey amounts to approximately 11 miles of celluloid. That is a physical-length description of the film version, not a measure of how long the movie plays on screen. Runtime is measured in minutes; the 11-mile figure describes film stock.

How much IMAX film was shot during production?
AP separately reported that 2.1 million feet of IMAX film was shot during production. That figure describes footage exposed while making the movie, not the length of its finished release print. It should not be treated as a conversion or alternative expression of the Times’ approximately 11-mile figure: the two reports refer to different stages of filmmaking. Why did Nolan say the film had to be under three hours?
In an Associated Press interview published April 27, 2026, Nolan said that showing the movie on IMAX film mattered to him because the entire movie was shot on that format. He also said the longest film he had been able to get onto an IMAX projector was three hours, and that The Odyssey was shorter than Oppenheimer. The Odyssey adapts the ancient epic attributed to Homer, following Odysseus’ return journey and his family, according to the Los Angeles Times. The runtime and film-stock numbers answer different questions: the first tells you how long the film plays, while the others describe physical film used for its version or during production.
