Black Bag is worth watching if you want a spy thriller driven less by action spectacle than by the strain of deciding whether you can trust the person closest to you. Steven Soderbergh’s 2025 film turns a hunt for a suspected intelligence leak into a sleek, dialogue-led marital drama; its pleasures are tense conversations, strategic deception and two leads who make every exchange feel consequential.
What is Black Bag about?
Written by David Koepp and directed by Steven Soderbergh, Black Bag stars Cate Blanchett as Kathryn Woodhouse and Michael Fassbender as her husband, George. Both are intelligence agents. When George is tasked with finding a traitor, Kathryn becomes one of the people under suspicion. The likely suspects are drawn together as the investigation centers on a fictional piece of dangerous malware called Severus. Focus Features’ official film page outlines the premise.
The software gives the investigation high stakes, but it is not the film’s main attraction. Koepp told Focus Features that he wanted the political impact to be simple enough to grasp quickly, so the audience could return to the six characters. That choice makes the threat a plot engine for a more intimate contest: George must investigate people whose motives he cannot easily read, including his wife. Koepp’s interview explains that emphasis.
What kind of spy thriller is it?
Think interpersonal suspense rather than action-first spectacle. The film’s tension comes from what the characters reveal, conceal and infer in conversation, and from the possibility that professional judgment may collide with private loyalty. It is still a spy thriller with a serious intelligence threat, but the marriage is the emotional center of the story.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That reading is shared by critics, though it remains critical interpretation, not a measure of every viewer’s response. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle called it a “delicious marital drama cloaked as a sleek spy thriller” and gave it three and a half stars out of four. Read Coyle’s AP review. BFI Sight and Sound likewise frames the film as a sly study of relationships and deception among spies. Director Soderbergh said older viewers who had experienced long relationships connected more strongly with the stakes; that is his account of screenings, not a demographic study. Read the BFI interview.
Is Black Bag worth watching?
My recommendation is yes, especially for viewers who enjoy intelligent, controlled thrillers in which a pause or a carefully chosen answer can carry as much suspense as a chase. Blanchett and Fassbender’s central pairing gives the story’s suspicion a personal cost: every question George asks about the case also presses on the marriage.

It may be a less satisfying choice if you want a spy film built around frequent action sequences or elaborate technical exposition. Black Bag keeps its geopolitical premise legible and spends its attention on the people manipulating one another. The result is compact rather than sprawling: the Associated Press lists a 93-minute runtime, while Universal gives 1 hour 34 minutes, a small difference in reported running time. Universal’s home-entertainment page lists the latter.
Who is in the cast?
Alongside Blanchett and Fassbender, the ensemble includes Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke and Pierce Brosnan. The group matters because the investigation is a pressure test for a circle of characters, not simply a two-person puzzle; the shifting suspicions give the marriage story its spy-thriller structure. The complete cast and official film details are on Focus Features’ film page.
