Disney currently lists a U.S. theatrical release date of December 18, 2026.
What is the new Avengers 5 title?
Marvel and Disney now call the film Avengers: Doomsday. Disney’s current film listing gives that title alongside the release date and creative credits.
| Title | Status | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| Avengers: The Kang Dynasty | Earlier announced title | Appeared on an earlier Marvel theatrical schedule; the Associated Press describes the film as originally conceived under this name. |
| Avengers: Doomsday | Current official title | Used in Disney’s current film listing and its March 2025 production announcement. |
Why did Marvel change the Kang Dynasty title?
The public account points to a combination of franchise and creative changes, but it does not establish one definitive reason for the title decision. The Associated Press reports that the movie was substantially retooled after Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, was dropped from the franchise following his conviction. That connects the change in direction to Majors’ departure, but does not prove it was the sole cause of the new title.
Kevin Feige offered additional context in remarks reported by GamesRadar in July 2025. Feige said Marvel had begun questioning Kang’s scale as a saga villain before the actor’s legal case: “We had started even before what had happened to the actor happened, we had started to realize that Kang wasn’t big enough, wasn’t Thanos,” GamesRadar reported. The comments indicate that Marvel had already been discussing a creative shift; they are not a formal, complete studio explanation of the title change.

What changed, and what is confirmed now?
The distinction is between an earlier title and the current one, not two names Marvel is using interchangeably. In March 2025, Disney announced production under Avengers: Doomsday, named the Russo brothers as directors, and said Robert Downey Jr. would return as Victor von Doom. The AP’s September 2026 interview-led preview describes the film as retooled from its original Kang Dynasty conception. Joe Russo characterized the script as “a living organism,” while Anthony Russo said, “We want the greatest value of the film to reside in the new thing it’s bringing to the table.” The Associated Press published those comments.
Disney’s current listing credits Anthony and Joe Russo as directors and Stephen McFeely as writer, and identifies Downey as Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom. Those credits and the title are established; they do not reveal the film’s full plot or establish that Kang has been erased from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
