The claim that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is “struggling” to accept losing his royal status comes from anonymous-source reporting, not a public statement or independently verified account of his private feelings. The official record is clearer: Andrew said in October 2025 that he would stop using his titles and honours, and Buckingham Palace later announced a formal process to remove them.
What prompted the “struggling” claim?
A Marie Claire article published December 21, 2025 relayed reporting attributed to the Daily Mail. It said unnamed sources described Andrew as having difficulty accepting the loss of his status and claimed he insisted that staff call him “sir.” The account did not identify those sources or include a direct comment from Andrew confirming the claims.
That distinction matters: “struggling” is a characterization attributed to anonymous sources, not an established fact about Andrew’s private reaction. The article’s references to “this Christmas” concerned the Christmas period around its December 2025 publication, not a later or current report.
What changed about Andrew’s titles?
October 17, 2025: Andrew said he would stop using his titles
In a statement published by The Royal Family, Andrew said he had discussed the matter with the King and his family and would “no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.” He also said, “I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

October 30, 2025: Buckingham Palace announced a formal process
Buckingham Palace announced that the King had initiated a formal process to remove Andrew’s style, titles and honours. The Palace said he would be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
In its October 31, 2025 report, ITV described the process and Andrew’s agreement to move from his Windsor home. ITV also noted that he had stopped using the style HRH and lost military titles and charity patronages in 2022.

Did King Charles strip Andrew of his titles?
The sequence was not simply that the King announced an immediate removal on October 17. That day, Andrew said he would no longer use his titles and honours, with the King’s agreement. On October 30, Buckingham Palace said a formal process to remove his style, titles and honours had begun. These official announcements establish the public decisions and process; they do not verify what Andrew privately feels about them.
