An already-owned laptop can cost less in cash if it draws little power and your home internet and electricity are dependable. A VPS avoids keeping your home setup online, but its monthly rent is only part of the cost: check outbound-data limits, overage or suspension rules, and any extras before comparing.
How to compare the real costs
Compare both options over the same billing period and with the same stream profile and hours. There is no universal winner: laptop power draw, local electricity prices and VPS plan terms vary, and no general figure establishes what an “old laptop” costs to run.
Estimate the laptop’s electricity cost
Measure the laptop’s average draw while it is running the intended stream; a plug-in watt meter can help. Then calculate:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity tariff per kWh = electricity cost.

Use the hours in your actual billing period and your own tariff. For example, do not substitute an idle-power reading if the laptop will be encoding or playing video continuously. Add any other costs that matter to you, such as equipment replacement or your time monitoring and restarting the setup; these are not included in the electricity formula.
Calculate the VPS total, not just its advertised rent
For the VPS, add the plan price to any outbound-transfer overage and optional storage, backup, monitoring or software fees. Check whether the provider throttles, bills extra or suspends service when the transfer quota is exceeded. An entry-level monthly price by itself does not show that a plan has enough capacity for a continuous stream.

There is not enough information to name a reliable all-in VPS cost across providers and regions. Get the current terms for the exact plan you would use, including its transfer allowance and overage policy. A meaningful cash comparison also needs your location, tariff, measured laptop draw, stream profile and number of operating hours.
Estimate how much data your stream sends
Bitrate and operating time determine the approximate amount of outbound data the encoder sends. At a steady bitrate, a higher-quality profile uses more transfer capacity; continuous operation makes even a modest bitrate add up. Compare your intended profile with the VPS’s included outbound transfer for the same number of hours, then check its overage or suspension conditions.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends choosing a quality that works reliably with your available upload connection, testing upload bitrate and testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. It recommends RTMPS and gives profile-specific bitrate guidance. For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for 720p30; these are recommendations for those profiles, not requirements for every music stream. Before settling on a bitrate, test the home connection while the stream is running and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A setting that is technically supported can still be unreliable on a connection with insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity.

The laptop may be attractive when its measured electricity cost is low and you trust your home power and internet. A VPS may suit you better if keeping a computer and home connection in the loop is undesirable and you are comfortable administering a server. Compare recovery and monitoring arrangements as well as cash cost; neither a laptop nor a VPS should be treated as a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting.

Long streams are not guaranteed to become full-length archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its help guidance warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one continuous 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete, available replay; plan separately for recordings you need to retain. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Music rights are your responsibility
The equipment running the stream does not change the rights requirement. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the music and the intended use before broadcasting.
A third option: managed cloud streaming
If you would rather not leave equipment running at home or administer a VPS, a managed service is another option to compare. - Measure the laptop’s power draw under the intended streaming workload, then calculate electricity cost using your tariff and the hours in your billing period.
- Choose a YouTube-supported stream profile, test upload capacity with representative audio and movement, and monitor stream health.
- Ask VPS providers for the exact plan price, outbound-transfer allowance, overage or suspension rules and any additional fees. Compare the plan against the same profile and operating hours as the laptop.
- Weigh the resulting cash costs against your reliance on home power and broadband, your willingness to administer a server, and the recovery and monitoring arrangements available to you.
- Confirm music rights and decide how you will retain recordings, given YouTube’s warning about archiving streams longer than 12 hours.
