A December 2023 report attributed to leaker Daniel Richtman said Illumination was preparing a pitch for a shared Nintendo movie universe that could culminate in a Smash crossover. The cited coverage did not establish that Nintendo accepted the pitch or that a film entered production.
What did the Illumination pitch report claim?
ComicBook.com reported on December 21, 2023, that Illumination was preparing a pitch for a shared Nintendo cinematic universe, with separate films building toward a Super Smash Bros. movie. The outlet attributed the claim to Daniel Richtman, also known as DanielRPK, and compared the proposed buildup to Marvel’s path to The Avengers. Read ComicBook.com’s report.
Nintendo Wire covered the claim the following day, attributing it to DanielkRpk via ResetEra. It said Nintendo’s agreement was unknown and urged readers to treat the report skeptically. That second article confirms the rumor circulated; it is not independent confirmation that a pitch was made or approved. Read Nintendo Wire’s coverage.
Has Nintendo confirmed a Super Smash Bros. film?
No. Nintendo’s official announcements confirm an Illumination partnership for animated films based on Super Mario Bros., not a shared Nintendo cinematic universe or a Smash film.

What did Miyamoto and Illumination say about crossovers?
In an April 1, 2026 report about crossovers in a Mario film, GameSpot quoted Miyamoto as saying, “I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining [together in one film].” Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri described conversations about whether a particular scene might be fun with a character such as Pikmin, with Miyamoto judging whether the idea felt right. Read GameSpot’s report.
Those comments point to a selective, scene-by-scene approach at that time, rather than an expectation that every Nintendo franchise would unite in one film. GameSpot characterized a Smash movie as not in the works; the comments do not prove that a crossover could never happen in the future.

Why would a Smash movie be complicated?
The roster draws on many game franchises, and not every character is solely owned by Nintendo. ComicBook.com’s 2023 report noted that characters such as Kirby and Pikachu involve co-ownership, while Nintendo Wire raised licensing and studio coordination as possible hurdles. The coverage also pointed to a separate Zelda film with Sony in the production picture. These are potential complications identified by those outlets, not a definitive account of the legal terms or rights required for any particular film.

A meaningful confirmation would come from Nintendo, Illumination, or another directly involved company, or from reporting that establishes a specific development milestone. Until then, distinguish between the 2023 leaker-attributed pitch rumor, official announcements about Mario films, and later comments about limited crossover ideas. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an existing Nintendo Switch game, first released December 7, 2018, but its existence is unrelated to whether a movie has been approved. GameSpot’s game listing.
