There is no universal winner: a refurbished mini PC can look inexpensive once bought, but its true cost includes electricity, connectivity, backup, maintenance and your time. A VPS has recurring compute and data charges, but must be sized for the actual stream. Compare both over the same period using your measured power draw, current local electricity rate and a VPS quote that can handle the workload. For a prerecorded-video loop, a managed cloud looping service is a separate third option.
What determines which option costs less?
The answer depends on your stream, location and operating choices—not just the mini PC’s purchase price or a VPS provider’s entry-level headline price. The evidence does not establish comparable current prices for refurbished mini PCs and adequately provisioned VPS plans in India, or confirm their performance for a defined stream. A numerical break-even point would therefore require current quotes and your own assumptions.
Use the same comparison period for each option, such as 12 months, and compare total cost alongside performance and operational work.
| Option | Include in the cost | Who operates and recovers it? |
|---|---|---|
| Refurbished mini PC at home | Purchase price, measured electricity, any incremental internet and backup-power costs, maintenance or replacement allowance, and the value of setup and recovery time. | You install and monitor the encoder and are responsible for restoring it and the home connection after a failure. |
| Self-managed VPS | Recurring server charges, applicable taxes or overages, storage or traffic fees, and administration and recovery time. | You configure the encoder, monitor compute and data limits, and recover failures. |
| Managed cloud looping service | Subscription and the provider’s current storage, quality and billing limits. | The service handles the looping operation described by its provider; check its actual recovery and support terms. |
These approaches are not interchangeable. A mini PC or VPS can run an encoder for a continuous feed; a managed looping service can send uploaded prerecorded video. Choose based on what your channel actually needs, not on an electricity-only comparison.

How to calculate a mini PC’s electricity cost
Measure the workload, not the product label
Average wall draw depends on the device and what it is doing. To estimate it, measure the mini PC while it runs the intended encoder workload. A plug-in electricity usage meter can help; no particular meter or mini PC model has been established as suitable here.
Apply the formula and your local marginal rate
Monthly energy use in kilowatt-hours = average wall watts Ă— hours per day Ă— days Ă· 1,000. Multiply that result by the marginal electricity rate that applies to your household’s next units of consumption. For a 24-hour stream over 30 days, each average watt uses 0.72 kWh.

- Intel Core i3-8100T 3.10 GHz 6MB Cache 4C/4T processor provides reliable performance and efficiency
- 16GB DDR4 memory; 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD
- Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for enhanced viewing and sharp details
- Windows 11 Pro OS is so familiar and easy to use, you’ll feel like an expert. It starts up and resumes fast, has more built-in security to help keep you safe, and comes with great built-in apps
- I/O Ports: 2 x USB-A 2.0 4 x USB-A 3.0 / 3.1/3.2 Gen 1 1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm Headphone/Microphone Input/Output 1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm Line Output 1 x RJ45 (Gigabit) 1 x DisplayPort 1.2 1 x HDMI 1.4
There is no single India-wide electricity cost: utility, tariff category, consumption slab and actual usage affect the applicable rate. Use your current bill or your utility’s current schedule for the marginal units. The Central Electricity Authority’s tariff compendium is another route to state and utility comparisons: CEA tariff and duty reports.
An illustrative calculation, not a device test
As an arithmetic illustration, iTechGuides Team (2026) gives an 8 W device running for 30 days: that is 5.76 kWh, or ₹46.08 at an assumed ₹8/kWh. This is not a measured mini-PC result, and ₹8/kWh is not a nationally applicable Indian tariff. Your measured draw and marginal rate may differ.

How to compare a mini PC with a VPS fairly
- Define the stream. Specify whether you are looping an uploaded recording or encoding a live feed, and set the target resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. The encoder workload determines the processing capacity you need.
- Check channel and connection readiness. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. Its guidance says upload capacity must support the stream bitrate, recommends 20% headroom and warns that connection disruptions can break a stream. See YouTube Help: get started with live streaming and YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Compare suitable offers, not entry-level labels. For a mini PC, check the current refurbished listing, condition, warranty and whether the system can sustain your encoder workload. For a VPS, get a current quote with adequate processing capacity and outbound data allowance, and check storage, traffic limits, taxes and overages. No like-for-like VPS price or specific refurbished listing has been established here.
- Use one cost period. For example, over 12 months, add the mini PC’s purchase cost amortized across that period to measured monthly power and any incremental internet, backup, maintenance and replacement costs. Add the value of setup and recovery time. For the VPS, total recurring server, traffic, storage and applicable extra charges, plus your administration and recovery time.
- Compare operations as well as money. Check whether the connection and power are reliable enough, what happens when the encoder or service fails, how much monitoring you can provide, and how much administration you are willing to do.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and provides bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate. It also recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Those requirements inform the workload to price; a mini PC’s generic product description alone does not prove it is suitable. Consult the current YouTube encoder guidance.

If you want uploaded videos to play continuously as a YouTube live stream, a home computer and VPS are not the only choices. A managed looping service is a distinct option: compare its subscription, storage and quality limits, included automation, recovery behavior and support against the DIY costs and work. It does not replace a live-production setup that depends on encoding a live feed.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the upload from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube and prerecorded uploads, not camera-based live production. See StreamNeo for current terms, or start the free day.

What to decide before buying or subscribing
- For a home mini PC, verify the current listing and warranty, measure wall draw during the intended workload, and account for local power, internet and backup needs.
- For a VPS, obtain a current quote that covers the required compute and outbound data, and check taxes, overages, storage and traffic terms.
- For any DIY setup, include the time and cost of configuration, monitoring and recovery—not only hardware or server rent.
- For a prerecorded loop, compare managed service terms and limits with the value of avoiding home hardware and server administration.
