For a prerecorded video that needs to loop on YouTube while you are away, a managed cloud service can replace the need to leave a PC running. For a live camera, game, or interactive production, a cloud virtual machine is more like renting a remote computer, and its compute, storage, and transfer costs can add up. If you already own a PC, compare cloud costs with the electricity it actually uses at your local marginal tariff—not with its power-supply rating.
First identify what “cloud streaming” means
Two different services are often described as cloud streaming, but they solve different problems:
- A managed prerecorded-stream service takes uploaded videos and sends them to YouTube repeatedly. It can suit an unattended 24/7 channel that does not need a live camera or interactive production.
- A cloud PC or virtual machine (VM) is a rented computer on which you run an encoder or production workflow. It can be used for live production, but you pay according to the machine and related services you use.
Google Cloud Live Stream API is a separate managed encoding and distribution product: its charges depend on active channel time, resolution, inputs, outputs, and distribution. It is not the same as a low-priced relay that loops prerecorded files.
Calculate the cost of keeping your PC on
Measure actual power draw
Use a plug-in electricity meter to measure the complete setup during the workload you plan to run. Include the PC and, where practical, any capture or encoding devices that will remain on. Do not treat the power supply unit’s maximum rating as the PC’s average wall consumption.

Convert measured watts into an electricity estimate
Use this formula:
Average measured watts ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours × marginal rupees per kWh
Use the applicable rate on your current household bill, including the slab you expect the additional use to fall into. Indian electricity rates vary by state, DISCOM, customer category, and slab; the Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 edition of Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average rates of electricity supply in India breaks out data by DISCOM and category. A national single-rate assumption will not give every household a reliable estimate.
For illustration only, assume a PC averages 100 W and runs 24 hours a day for 30 days. That works out to 72 kWh (0.1 kW × 720 hours). Multiply 72 by your own marginal rupees-per-kWh rate. The 100 W figure is hypothetical, not a typical-PC estimate.

Compare the cloud option on equal terms
Compare the same operating hours and outcome. Before treating an advertised starting price as your monthly total, account for the stream’s input type, quality, destinations, storage, and any required setup or monitoring.

Do not compare an Indian electricity estimate in rupees with a cloud price in dollars without checking a current exchange rate and applicable taxes or fees. A local PC’s original purchase price is a sunk cost for an incremental monthly comparison; if you need to buy a new PC, include that cost separately.
For live production, check the input path and YouTube settings
A cloud VM can encode and send a live production, but it does not eliminate the need to get the live camera, game, or other input to that machine. If the source is at home, your home connection still has to carry it to the cloud. The same encoder and network requirements apply whether encoding locally or on a VM.

For H.264, its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; recommendations vary by codec and resolution. YouTube also recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or cloud instance will perform adequately.

Choose the option that matches your stream
For a prerecorded 24/7 documentary channel
Compare managed looping services with the electricity cost of your existing PC. Check the plan’s quality, storage, stream count, billing period, and recovery behavior. If your videos need to loop unattended, a service designed for uploaded videos may be simpler than configuring a VM and encoder yourself.
For a live camera, game, or interactive show
Compare the electricity for a PC you already own against the VM’s runtime, storage, transfer, and setup costs. Verify that the VM has suitable resources for the encoder and that the path from your live source to the VM has enough capacity. A prerecorded-video relay is not a substitute for a live production workflow.
For a new PC purchase
Do not compare only the cloud bill with electricity. Include the PC’s purchase cost over the period you expect to use it, along with power and any maintenance. Keep one-time hardware costs distinct from recurring cloud charges.
