What is 11.22.63 about?
Jake Epping, a high-school teacher, learns from his friend Al Templeton that a portal can take someone back to October 21, 1960. Al recruits Jake to travel into the past and prevent JFK’s assassination. Jake keeps watch on Lee Harvey Oswald while trying to carry out the mission, but building a life in the past—and growing close to fellow teacher Sadie—complicates his priorities.

The series’ tension comes not only from whether Jake can change history, but from what that effort costs him as he becomes attached to the life he has made. It combines time-travel science fiction with thriller suspense, a 1960s setting and a romance subplot, rather than playing solely as an assassination-focused thriller. Tom’s Guide’s January 10, 2026 feature describes the premise and adaptation.
Can you finish it in a weekend?
The series has eight episodes and was released as a limited series, so it has a defined run rather than an ongoing season commitment. That makes it a manageable weekend choice for viewers who enjoy concentrated, serialized storytelling. The episode count alone does not determine how long a watch will take; check Netflix’s episode listings for runtimes in your region.
Tom’s Guide characterizes the story as reaching a definitive conclusion. That is the publication’s assessment of the ending, rather than a guarantee that every viewer will find it conclusive.
What to know about the adaptation
11.22.63 adapts Stephen King’s 2011 novel, published as 11/22/63. The screen version makes changes while retaining the novel’s core premise. If you want to compare those choices or spend more time with the original story, Stephen King’s official page for the novel is a starting point.
Rank #2
The series originally premiered through Hulu in 2016. Hulu’s January 8, 2016 press release documents its original release context; Netflix’s later addition does not make it a Netflix original.

Tom’s Guide reported an 83% critics score and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes in its January 10, 2026 article. Those are figures as reported at that time, not necessarily the current Rotten Tomatoes aggregates. The article also attributes this Critics Consensus to Rotten Tomatoes: “Though the execution feels almost as dated as the period it represents, 11.22.63 gradually reveals a compelling, well-performed series of events.”
