Who was Irv Gotti?
Born Irving Lorenzo, Gotti built a career that spanned DJing, production and record-label leadership. The Washington Post traced his beginnings to Queens, where he mixed records and performed as DJ Irv, before he became a prominent figure in hip-hop and R&B.
In the late 1990s, he co-founded Murder Inc. Records with his brother. The imprint rose to worldwide prominence through artists including Ja Rule and Ashanti, while Gotti’s work also connected him with performers such as Jay-Z, Nas and DMX. The Associated Press obituary and The Washington Post’s account describe that path from local DJ work to label leadership.
What music made Murder Inc. prominent?

The Associated Press also reported that Gotti earned a Grammy for Ashanti’s “Rock Wit U (Awww Baby).” Together, the records and artist relationships help explain the label’s influence beyond its core hip-hop audience.
What was confirmed about his death?
Gotti’s family confirmed that he died on February 5, 2025, at age 54. Def Jam announced his death, and the family statement was reported by the Los Angeles Times. Neither announcement stated a cause, so a cause of death is not established by those public statements. The Los Angeles Times report and the Associated Press report provide the announcement details.

How colleagues remembered him
Def Jam Recordings, in a statement quoted by the Associated Press, said: “His creative genius and unwavering dedication to the culture birthed countless hits, defining an era of music that continues to resonate with fans worldwide.”
Lyor Cohen, a former Def Jam executive and then global head of music at YouTube and Google, said: “Def Jam has lost one of it’s most creative soldiers,” according to the Associated Press. The AP reproduced the quotation with “it’s”; it is retained here as reported.
