Iru: The Remarkable Life of Irawati Karve is a 2024 biography of the influential Indian anthropologist and sociologist, written by her granddaughter Urmilla Deshpande and academic researcher Thiago Pinto Barbosa. Rather than trace Karve’s life year by year, the book moves among fieldwork, scholarship, travel and family life. That structure makes it a portrait of both a researcher and a woman who shaped her life on her own terms.
Who was Irawati Karve, and why is she important?
Irawati Karve was an Indian anthropologist and sociologist whose work examined kinship and social organization across India. She earned a doctorate in Berlin in 1930 and later led the Sociology and Anthropology department at Deccan College in Pune, according to the Indian Academy of Sciences profile.
Her scholarship brought comparative study of kinship into conversation with India’s linguistic and regional diversity. Kinship Organization in India is a central contribution; an INFLIBNET educational chapter describes its attention to kinship structures and regional patterns, and Deccan College’s repository catalogs the work under Karve’s authorship.
Karve also wrote Yuganta, which approaches the Mahabharata through historical and anthropological interpretation. Institutional sources identify it as an award-winning work; the Sahitya Akademi awards list records the award in 1968.

What makes Iru a biography in motion?
The book does not follow a strictly linear chronology. In a 2 November 2024 review in Scroll, the reviewer describes a four-part structure that moves among travel, fieldwork, academic work and family experience. The scenes, as the review presents them, range from voyages and trains to remote field locations and Karve riding a Lambretta in Pune.
This movement lets the biography place intellectual work alongside the practical texture of a life: where Karve went, whom she encountered and how her roles as scholar and family member occupied the same world. The travel scenes and structural interpretation are the reviewer’s account of the book, rather than independent verification of each episode.
How does the book present Karve’s scholarship and independence?
Iru links Karve’s research to the conditions and choices of her life, rather than isolating her ideas from their settings. The publisher’s description says she travelled to Berlin for doctoral study in 1927 and recounts her research on skull measurement as a rejection of claims of racial superiority. That episode, including the description’s count of 149 skulls, should be understood as the biography’s account; it is not independently confirmed here against her dissertation or archival records.
The larger scholarly record establishes the scope of her work on Indian kinship and her senior academic role at Deccan College. The biography’s personal and travel-focused scenes add a narrative dimension to those achievements, while its non-linear form resists reducing Karve to a list of dates and publications.

Who might want to read it?
The book is a good fit for readers interested in Indian anthropology, the history of social science, or biographies that connect a subject’s ideas to everyday and family life. Those seeking a strictly chronological reference account may find its shifting structure less conventional; readers open to a scene-led narrative may value how it brings places and relationships into Karve’s intellectual story.
