Spirit Halloween answered Saturday Night Live’s Season 50 premiere parody with a mock costume-package image calling the show an “Irrelevant 50-year-old TV show.” The exchange unfolded over two days in September 2024—and the sources describing the post show a joke image, not a costume listed for sale.
What happened between SNL and Spirit Halloween?
Saturday Night Live opened Season 50 on September 28, 2024, with a pre-taped fake commercial parodying Spirit Halloween. Two days later, on September 30, the retailer responded on X with a Halloween-style package mock-up aimed at the show. TVLine covered the sketch and the reply; Us Weekly also reported the response.
What was the SNL sketch about?
The fake commercial made fun of Spirit Halloween’s seasonal business: temporary stores occupying vacant commercial spaces, their short operating window, and costume names that describe recognizable characters indirectly. Coverage identifies Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, and Michael Longfellow among the performers in the sketch. TVLine’s report describes the parody and its targets.
What did Spirit Halloween say about SNL?
Spirit Halloween posted the caption, “We are great at raising things back from the dead @nbcsnl.” The accompanying image adopted the look of a costume package and labeled its subject “Irrelevant 50-year-old TV show,” with the mock features “Dated references,” “Unknown cast members,” and “Shrinking ratings.” Those phrases were the retailer’s punchline, not independently established descriptions of the show.

Was the Spirit Halloween SNL costume real?
The package was presented in coverage as a social-media image or meme accompanying the response. The sources do not show a retail listing or establish that Spirit Halloween sold the parody as an actual costume. Montclair State University’s 2024 Spirit Halloween Study reproduces the image in its discussion of the retailer, while E! News describes the post as a clapback rather than a product launch.
Does “shrinking ratings” describe a verified ratings trend?
No ratings figure is established by the cited coverage for this exchange. “Shrinking ratings” appears as copy on Spirit Halloween’s parody package; it should be understood as part of the joke, not as a measured statistic. The sources also do not establish a reliable figure for the post’s reach or audience reaction.
