Iron Maiden’s 2016 Ed Force One was a chartered Boeing 747-400, registration TF-AAK, used to carry the band, crew, stage production and equipment on The Book of Souls World Tour. Bruce Dickinson completed 747 pilot training for the tour. The aircraft was repaired after a ground accident in Chile, then later withdrawn from use and broken up, according to aviation records.
What was Ed Force One?
“Ed Force One” is Iron Maiden’s nickname for its touring aircraft, combining the band’s mascot Eddie with a play on “Air Force One.” For The Book of Souls World Tour in 2016, the name referred to a Boeing 747-400 registered TF-AAK. The aircraft was chartered from Air Atlanta Icelandic and painted in Iron Maiden livery, rather than owned by the band. Iron Maiden’s 2015 announcement and aircraft records identify the plane and its role.
The 747 was not the aircraft used on every earlier Ed Force One tour. Iron Maiden said it had used Boeing 757s on tours in 2008, 2009 and 2011; the 747-400 was the larger aircraft chosen for the 2016 tour.
Why did Iron Maiden use a 747 instead of a 757?
The 747’s cargo capacity let the band transport its stage production, equipment and desks in the hold without the extensive structural modifications needed to fit the previous tour’s equipment into a 757. That practical advantage was central to the choice, not simply the aircraft’s size or visual impact.

In the band’s August 25, 2015 announcement, Bruce Dickinson explained that the 747’s “colossal size and freight capacity” allowed the production to travel in the cargo hold without the major modifications required for the 757. He also said the band seized an opportunity to lease a 747 from Air Atlanta Icelandic for the tour. Read Dickinson’s explanation of the cargo advantage and his account of the lease.
Did Bruce Dickinson really fly the 747?
Yes, Dickinson completed 747 pilot training before the tour. When Iron Maiden announced the aircraft in August 2015, it said he was training for his 747 license. Cardiff Aviation reported on February 19, 2016, that he had completed the training. Cardiff Aviation’s announcement confirms the milestone.

That does not establish that Dickinson alone operated the aircraft or flew every tour leg. The supported claim is that he completed 747 training; the tour aircraft was a charter, and the available announcements do not say he was its sole pilot or crew member.

What happened in the Chile ground accident?
On March 12, 2016, Ed Force One was involved in a ground accident at Santiago Airport in Chile. The incident damaged both port-side engines. Iron Maiden reported that each replacement engine weighed 5,000 kg and that the pair had been flown 12,000 km to Chile. These are figures reported by the band in 2016, not independent measurements. The band’s engine update gives the details.
On March 21, Iron Maiden said repairs were complete and the aircraft was scheduled to leave Santiago on March 22 to rejoin the tour in Brasília. The band described the repair period as ten days. The 747 therefore returned to tour service rather than ending its tour in Chile. Iron Maiden’s March update reported the repair and planned return.
What happened to Ed Force One after the tour?
Ed Force One was the nickname for the tour aircraft, while TF-AAK identifies the specific 747-400. Planespotters.net’s aircraft records report that TF-AAK was withdrawn from use on April 15, 2022, and broken up in July 2024. This later status comes from aviation records, not Iron Maiden’s original tour announcement. Planespotters.net’s aircraft history records the dates.
