How Iris and Carl Apfel met and married
Iris and Carl met during a vacation at Lake George, New York, in 1947. They married in 1948, according to the PBS POV description of the documentary Iris and the Wisconsin Alumni Association.
How long were Iris and Carl Apfel together?
They remained together from their 1948 marriage until Carl’s death in 2015. The Wisconsin Alumni Association describes their marriage as lasting 67 years. In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Iris said they had been “together 68 years.” Those are the sources’ respective descriptions; the difference should not be treated as an exact day-count.
Old World Weavers: a shared creative and business life

The business made fabrics and took on textile restoration projects. PBS notes work for museums and White House collections. A 2024 Guardian obituary summarizes their complementary strengths as Carl’s business sense and Iris’s design eye; that is the obituary’s characterization, rather than a quotation from either of them.
What they said about their relationship
In the documentary Iris, Carl says, “It’s not a dull marriage, I can tell you that.” The film also depicts the couple working and traveling together. Iris offered a more direct expression of her affection in her 2018 Guardian interview: asked about the greatest love of her life, she answered, “Carl. He was a terrific guy and we were together 68 years.”
These remarks offer glimpses of how they spoke about one another, not a complete account of their private life. The documentary Iris is a source for seeing their partnership on screen as well as hearing Carl’s words.
